BCMML Week 9 – Cougars defend the den, Hawks soar

in regular season

November 20, 2017

Week 9 of BC Major Midget League now complete, and the two leaders are starting to separate themselves from the pack.

One more week marks the halfway point of the regular season.

Cougars vs NW Giants

In a big weekend at home in Prince George, the Cougars pulled off a 1-0 OT win vs the Vancouver North West Giants in game one, on a Floris Hunter goal with 5 seconds left, and then shut the door 6-2 in game two on Sunday.

Six different guys scored for the Cougars on Sunday, with Craig MacDonald putting up three assists, including two on the power play.

Owen Christensen and Cooper Connell scored for the Giants.

A couple of road steals by the Giants could have put them in third place tie with GVC. Instead, they’ve slipped one to fifth overall, one back of the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Valley West vs North East Chiefs

The Valley West Hawks meanwhile continue to put up wins, wracking up a pair of 6-2 decisions over the North East Chiefs last week. The Hawks remain two points back of the Cougars.

In game one, Nolan Krogfoss and Cameron MacDonald both scored hat tricks and one assist, while Arsheep Bains and Max Mohagen put up 4 assists.

In game two, the goals were evenly distributed, with six players scoring for the Hawks.

Greater Vancouver vs Thompson Blazers

Greater Vancouver Canadians put up two tight wins, a come from behind 5-3 EN win on Saturday in Ashcroft and a 3-2 win in Kamloops Sunday vs the gritty Thompson Blazers.

Danny Pearson got two for the Canadians in game one, with Marcus Pantazis notching two assists.

Tyson Gayer was 1G-1A and Tyson Steward was 2A for the Blazers.

In game two, Pantazis scored twice, including the winner, for GVC.

Fraser Valley vs Okanagan Rockets

Fraser Valley came up big with two home ice wins in Abbotsford vs the Okanagan Rockets, winning 2-1 on Saturday and 5-3 on Sunday. In the Saturday game, the teams were tied 1-1 after one and played through a scoreless second period, before Justin Plett got the winner about six minutes into the third for Fraser Valley.

In game two, the Rockets went up 2-1 after the first period, and then fell behind 3-2 at the end of second before tying the game about three minutes into the third, on Brendan Boyles’ second of the game.

But Fraser Valley’s Jason Bowen answered about a minute and a half later to put the TBirds up 4-3. Jake Mulder would finish it at 5-3 with 9:56 left, on helpers from Gage Goncalves and Dylan Anderson. Goncalves scored both T-Bird goals in the second.

Brandon Della Paolera had two assists for the Rockets.

North Island vs Kootenay Ice

A pair of 4-1 wins for the Silvertips in Nanaimo and Campbell River, moved the Tips up three places into a sixth place tie with the Okanagan Rockets.

Four separate Tips scored in game one, with River Fahey and Ethan Jones scoring 1G-1A, and Joshua Zary 2A.

In game two, Isaac Alvarado scored 2G-1A. Ethan Jones was 1G-2A and Cody Shepherd was 1G-1A.
