Salmon Arm derail Express 5-3

First period

Backs captain Grayson Constable opened the scoring just 4:05 into the game, with helpers from Marcus Mitchell and Spencer Hora.

The Express tied the game 1-1 at 9:36, on the power-play goal by Sam Kozlowski, on assists from Christian Sanda and Jordan Schulting with Logan Mostat off for slashing.

But the home team took the lead back at 18:25, on Noah Wakeford’s first BCHL goal with assists from Nick Unruh and Logan Mostat.

The Silverbacks outshot the Express 17-6 in the first frame.

Second period

Trevor Adams unassisted gave Salmon Arm a 3-1 lead at 4:55 of the second period, his first in the BCHL as well.

Coquitlam scored their second power-play goal of the night and cut the lead to 3-2 at 10:58, on a goal by Alex Ambrosio (Schulting, Mitch Newsome) with Demetri Kambietz penalized for hooking.

The Silverbacks outshot the Express 15-8 in the middle frame and lead 3-2 going into the third.

Third period

Coquitlam then opened the scoring in the final period, tying the game 3-3 at just 1:48 in on a marker from Christian Bosa (Riley Johnson, Jack Graham).

But the tie was short-lived. Just over two minutes later, Mostat notched his second of the season restored the lead (Austin Chorney, Mitch Stapley).

Salmon Arm’s Rhett Kingston finished the scoring on an empty netter for his fourth of the season with 28 seconds left (Tanner Campbell).

The Silverbacks lead 14-7 on the shot clock in the third.

Nick Tallarico got the win 18/21; while Clay Stevenson stopped 41/45 to keep the Express close.

The Silverbacks finished 1-for-6 on the power-play, and 3-for-5 on the penalty-kill. The Silverbacks are now 1-3-0-0 on home ice and have been outscored 28-22 overall.

The Backs face

Trail won it’s fourth straight game on Friday, 7-3 at home versus the Chilliwack Chiefs (1-4-1-1). The Smoke Eaters won 4-3 in Salmon Arm on Saturday, September 16th. Trail is 4-0-0-0 away from the Cominco Arena. The Smoke Eaters have outscored their opposition 31-17 total.

Ross Armour leads Trail with 6 goals and 16 points in 7 games, while Rhett Kingston is tied at the top for the Silverbacks with 4 goals and 6 points in his first 4 games. Josh Latta and Justin Wilson also have 6 points each. Latta was scratched on Friday, along with Julian Timba and Hudson Schandor who celebrated his 17th birthday.

Salmon Arm’s power-play is working at 21-percent, while Trail is 18-percent with the man-advantage. The Silverbacks penalty-kill is at 76-percent, and the Smoke Eaters are at 83-percent short-handed. Trail has 99 penalty minutes, and Salmon Arm has 96 penalty minutes.
