14 BC Players selected for National U17 Camps

Fourteen players from British Columbia have been selected to attend Hockey Canada’s U17 camp, July 26-August 1 in Calgary.

A total of 111 players were chosen from across Canada (and the US), and will be competing for 66 slots on the three Team Canada U17 teams, which compete in thee 2016 World U-17 Hockey Challenge October 30 – November 5 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Five defencemen and nine forwards were selected. Three players played outside of the province last year, but qualify as BC players due to residency.

Bafaro tallied 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) while playing for Okanagan Hockey Academy’s White Prep team this season. His Western Hockey League (WHL) rights are owned by the Tri-City Americans. Bafaro played for OHA in his bantam year as well.

Burzan helped the Valley West Hawks to a BC Major Midget League (MML) Championship with 47 points (16 goals, 31 assists) in 29 regular season games. He was drafted sixth overall by the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors. The Surrey native played his final year of bantam at North Shore Winter Club, which won Westerns in 2014-2015.

Cap, a North Vancouver native, scored 17 points (3 goals, 14 assists) from the blue line for the Giants. He was drafted eleventh overall by the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL, and was also part of the NSWC Bantam Championship team.

Chyzowski, a first round draft pick of the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers, scored 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists) for the Blazers in 31 games this season. The Kamloops native played his bantam year for the Kamloops Junior Blazers.

Fairbrother spent the season playing for Burnaby Winter Club’s “Elite 15” team that competed in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). He scored a total of 18 points (5 goals, 13 assists) in 35 games, earning the CSSHL’s Elite 15 “Top Defenseman” award. His WHL rights are owned by the Everett Silvertips. The North Vancouver native played his bantam hockey at BWC.

Leduc also played for Burnaby Winter Club’s Elite 15 team, and tallied a total of 15 points (1 goal, 14 assists) in 26 games. He was drafted in the second round by the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs. Leduc played his bantam hockey in Richmond.

Leppard was drafted eighth overall by the Prince George Cougars. He spent the 2015-2016 season with the Vancouver North West Giants, where he scored 14 goals and 17 assists for a total of 31 points in 34 games. Leppard originally from Whistler, played his peewee and bantam hockey at NSWC, winning two Westerns with the Winterhawks

Popowich was drafted third overall by the Vancouver Giants in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. He suited up for Okanagan Hockey Academy’s White Prep team this season and scored 42 points (15 goals 27 assists) in 33 CSSHL games. A native of Surrey, Popowich played two years of bantam at OHA.

Shepard scored 42 points (13 goals, 29 assists) in 37 games for the Giants this season. He was a second round draft pick of the Kamloops Blazers. The North Vancouver resident played peewee and bantam hockey at NSWC, and also won two Westerns there.

Zazula played for Delta Hockey Academy’s Prep team this season, and notched a total of 26 points (6 goals, 20 assists) in CSSHL play this season. He was selected in the fourth round of the WHL Bantam Draft by the Kamloops Blazers.

Zummack, a second round draft pick of the Red Deer Rebels, finished fifth in the MML in scoring this season, tallying 52 points (14 goals, 38 assists) in 37 games for the Okanagan Rockets. The Langley native played bantam at Delta Hockey Academy.

Nolan Foote played minor hockey in Colorado, Tristen Neilsen played at the Edge in Calgary, and Kaid Oliver played in Arizona.
