in Other News, regular season

February 7, 2018

Toronto – The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week 20 edition of the CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2017-18 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL’s Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

Moose Jaw #2

The Moose Jaw Warriors remained the second-best team in the CHL Wednesday as the highest-ranked squad from the Western Hockey League after splitting their two weekend games.

Friday, they took a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Red Deer Rebels before responding with a 4-1 victory over the Prince George Cougars. With 98 points (25G-73A) in 50 games, overage forward Brayden Burke is poised to become the first 100-point scorer in the CHL this season.

He’s in that position due to a fantastic January that saw him tally 20 points (5G-15A) in 11 games, including six straight multi-point games during a nine-game point streak. After becoming the first WHL club to 40 wins in the regular season, the Warriors return to action Friday, February 9 (7:00 p.m. CST) as they play host to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. This week marked the 18th straight week the Warriors have appeared in the CHL Top 10 Rankings.

Swift Current #5

Holding tight in the fifth spot for another week were the Swift Current Broncos, who appeared on the rankings for the 17th straight week.

The Broncos also split their two games this past week, losing 5-2 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes before taking a 5-3 victory over the Kootenay ICE. Broncos’ captain Glenn Gawdin (Calgary Flames) is challenging Burke for the WHL’s scoring lead. With 97 points (44G-53A) in 53 games, Gawdin ranks second in the WHL scoring race and third for most goals in the WHL as well.

Gawdin is also approaching a few personal and team milestones, sitting two games away from 300 for his WHL career. He also has 285 points (114G-171A) in his time with the Broncos, placing him ninth all-time on their scoring list. He needs three points to surpass Sheldon Kennedy, nine to overtake Joe Sakic and 17 to move ahead of Bryan Trottier on the Broncos’ all-time table.

The Broncos are back in action Friday, February 9 (7:00 p.m. CST) as they play host to the Prince Albert Raiders.

Everett #10

The Everett Silvertips moved into the Top 10 part of the CHL rankings this week, occupying the 10 spot. In a fierce matchup against the Kelowna Rockets, the Silvertips surpassed all challenges, sweeping the home-and-home series with a 3-2 victory Friday and 8-2 win Saturday.

Overage forward Partick Bajkov became the Silvertips’ all-time leading scorer in Friday’s contest, then tallied a hat trick and five points in Saturday’s contest to give him 269 points (106G-163A) in 324 career WHL games. As the Western Conference leaders, the Silvertips have posted an 8-1-0-1 record in their last 10 games and will look to continue their success Friday, February 9 (7:35 p.m. PST) as they play host to the Spokane Chiefs.

Kelowna – Honorable Mention

The Kelowna Rockets were also given an honourable mention in this week’s rankings, remaining the B.C. Division leaders despite the pair of losses to the Silvertips. Overage forward Carsen Twarynski (Philadelphia Flyers) is having a productive campaign, recently recording the first 30-goal season of his WHL career. The Rockets are back in action Wednesday, February 7 (7:05 p.m. PST) when they host the Vancouver Giants.
