The 39th edition of Calgary’s Mac’s AAA Midget Tournament is ready to roll. Competition starts on Boxing Day, and wraps up New Years Day with the championship game in the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Four BC Major Midget League boys teams are competing this year, down one from the number that have competed in recent years.

One female team, the Kootenay Ice will represent BC in the 10 team female pool, down from three last year.*

The top ranked BCMML boys team this year is the Cariboo Cougars, carrying an impressive 21-2-1-0 OTL regular season record into the tournament.

Caribou Cougars win Macs 1:1:15

The team will be looking to recapture the glory of two years ago, when they won seven straight, downing two undefeated teams in the playoffs, and winning the championship game 2-1 vs the Regina Pat Canadians in double overtime.

The Cougars will be joined this year by second place Okanagan Rockets (17-5-0-2), third place Vancouver North East Chiefs (15-4-0-3) and sixth place Greater Vancouver Canadians (11-9-3-1).

The boys teams play four round robin games (5 pools of 5 teams) over seven days in three main venues, the Max Bell Centre, Father David Bauer Arena (FDBA), and Flames Community Arena (formerly Centennial Arenas), with the boys final at the ScotiaBank Saddledome on New Years Day.

Last year’s BC teams included the Valley West Hawks (went in at 18-5-1), Caribou Cougars (17-6-3), along with #3 Vancouver North West Giants (15-5-4), #5 Vancouver North East Chiefs (12-7-7), and #7 South Island Royals (11-8-5).

This year’s group will be looking to improve on a disappointing 2015 campaign, which saw both Cougars and NW Giants eliminated in the semi-finals. Last year, the Calgary North West Flames won it in a 2-1 final vs the Lloydminster Bobcats.

Records last year:

NW Giants, 4W-1L-1T; Cariboo Cougars 4-2-0; Valley West Hawks, 2-1-1 North East Chiefs 1-3-0; and South Island Royals 0-4-0.

*The decline in the number of BC teams at Macs this year is likely due to the increased popularity of Academy teams in BC, which has pulled players out the BC Major Midget boys and Triple A girls programs. Academy teams do not participate in the Macs.
