The 41st John Reid Memorial, St. Albert Bantam AAA Tournament gets underway tomorrow at 8:00 AM sharp with Delta Wild Academy Green kicking things off vs the Lloydminster Bobcats.
The tournament arguably hosts the most competitive teams in Western Canada and USA, and is heavily scouted by WHL and NCAA. The tournament is named in honor of long-time St. Albert resident John Reid, who was a passionate player, coach, and supporter of the game.
Last year’s event featured top-level hockey by all competitors including teams from Western Canada and the Western United States. This year’s crop is also expected to be very strong. The 2018 JRMT champions were the CSSHL Northern Alberta Xtreme (Devon, AB), who defeated the Los Angeles Jr. Kings 5-3 in the tournament final.
Sixteen teams are facing off in the preliminary round, grouped into pools of four teams each. Again this year, the top 5 BC teams (as of early November standings) are coming from the CSSHL.
Each team will play a minimum of five games and a maximum of six. The top two teams in each division will advance to the Championship qualifiers.
There is one BC team in each pool with the exception of Reid Pool B, which includes both BWC and Yale. Teams will play three round robin games before advancing to the elimination round on Sunday. Championship games will be played Monday.
BC teams have had considerable success in recent years at the tournament.
