Cariboo lead 5 BCMML Teams in Mac’s Calgary tourney

This year’s Mac’s Midget AAA World Invitational, held annually in Calgary since 1978, again features the top five BC Major Midget Teams, in the 25 team male division.

The BC teams include the #1 Fraser Valley Thunderbirds (19-3-1-1), from Abbotsford; the #2 Cariboo Cougars (16-5-3-0) from Prince George; the #3 Vancouver North East Chiefs, (15-5-2-2) from Coquitlam,  the #4 Okanagan Rockets (14-7-1-2), from Kelowna; and the #5 Thomson Blazers (14-10-0) from Kamloops.

Other teams include the four host teams from Calgary – the Buffalos, Flames, Northstars and Royals, plus the nearby Okotoks Oilers, Airdrie CFR Bisons, and Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes represent Southern Alberta.

Edmonton area teams include – CAC Gregg Distributors, Fort Saskatchewan Boston Pizza Rangers, and the St. Albert Nektar Data Systems Raiders.

From Saskatchewan, Beardy’s Blackhawks (Willow Cree – Okemasis First Nation), Notre Dame Hounds (Wilcox), Regina Pat Canadians, Saskatoon Blazers, Saskatoon Contacts, and Swift Current Legionnaires.

Other teams include, Brampton 45s from Ontario, New York Jr. Islanders, and the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders (Colorado).

 

 

In the early going the Cariboo Cougars are the top BC team.

After two games, the Cougars are 1-0-1, for three points, locked in a three way tie for first place in Pool 4.

The Cougars opened with a 2-2 tie vs the Calgary Flames, and then downed the Brampton 45s, 4-3 in game two Friday morning. They’ll play Lethbridge Hurricanes tomorrow and Swift Current on Sunday.

 

 

The Okanagan Rockets are 1-1-0 in Pool 1, tied for second place. The Rockets were handled 6-2 by the 3-0-0 Saskatoon Blazers in their opener, and then downed the Rocky Mountain RoughRidders 6-2 in their second game, yesterday.

The Rockets will face CAC Gregg Distributors tomorrow, and the Calgary Royals on Sunday.

 

 

Fraser Valley Thunderbirds are 1-2-0 in fourth place in Pool 2. The T-Birds won their first game Boxing Day, 4-2 vs the Calgary Northstar’s; then dropped the next two games by a single goal, 1-0 to the Beardy’s Blackhawks on Thursday, and 5-4 to the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs Friday morning.

The Northstars outshot the T-Birds 33-16 in game one, Dawson Pelletier stopped 31. In game 2, the T-Birds were outshot 31-28, the lone goal was scored with 5:21 left in the game. The T-birds were outshot again in game 3, 36-22, including 15-2 in the third period, when the Chiefs scored the only two goals in the period for the win. John Lee led the Birds with 1G-2A.

The T-Birds will wrap up the round robin vs Notre Dame on Saturday morning.

 

 

The North East Chiefs have played just one game so far, a 6-0 shutout loss to Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers. The Oilers outshot the Chiefs 34-19 in the contest.

The Chiefs face the Calgary Buffaloes tonight, the St. Alberta Raiders on Saturday, and the Regina Pat Canadians on Sunday.

 

 

The Thompson Blazers have lost their first two outings, 5-3 vs the Airdrie Bisons, and 4-2 vs the New York Jr. Islanders.

In game 1, Thompson lead 3-2 midway through the second but gave up two late period power play goals. Airdrie scored the insurance midway through the third. Shots finished 27-22 for the Bisons.

In game 2, the Blazers outshot the Islanders 35-26, and led 2-1 after the second, but gave up 3 goals on 11 shots in the third, to finish behind 4-2.

Logan Stankoven led the Blazers with 2G and 8 PIMs. Kobe Grant saved 22.

The Blazers meet the Saskatoon Contacts tomorrow and Fort Saskatchewan on Sunday.
