BC open 0-2 at Mac’s – Day 1 results

BC teams were 0-2 in the opening day at the 38th Mac’s Midget Tournament in Calgary, Saturday. In both games BC goalies were stellar, as Alberta teams dominated the shot clock.

The South Island Royals (11-8-5), the #7 team in the BC Major Midget League, were downed 3-1 by the Lethbridge Hurricanes; while the North East Chiefs (12-7-7), the #5 team in the BC league, fell 7-4 to the Calgary Flames.

Lethbridge (11-5-7) is #4 in the Southern Division of the AAA Alberta Midget Hockey League. The Flames (16-2-2) are in first place in the same division, and second overall, four points back of North Division leaders, Lloydminster Bobcats.

In the NE Chiefs game, the Flames roared out to a 3-0 lead just three and half minutes in. Logan Bromhead stopped the tide about a minute later, to close out the scoring for the first.

The Chiefs came back with three goals in the third, against two by the Flames, to close the gap to 5-4 at the end of second. Chong Min Lee scored twice along with Hayden DeLorme.

Calgary scored twice late in the third to seal the win, and finish the scoring at 7-4. Adam Marcoux stopped 18-22 for the Flames, while Andrew Henderson saved 37 of 44 for the Chiefs.

The Flames got goals from six players; Markus Boguslavsky scored twice. Only one Calgary goal, the fourth, was a power play. Both teams were assessed four minor penalties.

In the South Island game, Aiden Wood opened about five minutes in for the Royals, but Lethbridge answered with 5:21 left to even it up 1-1 end of first.

Lethbridge scored early in the the second, and then finished with an empty netter, 3-1.

Zachary Myrowich stopped 41-43 for the Royals, Connor Lyons stopped 26 of 27 for the Hurricanes.

Other Highlights:

The #1 team in Alberta, the Lloydminster Bobcats (18-3-2, 85 GF-36 GA), opened with a 8-0 win over the Ontario (Southern California, 17-10-0) Avalanche. Bryce Kindropp sniped the hat trick; while Ty Smith notched four assists and Chase Wouters had a goal and two apples.

The Bobcats blasted the two Ontario goalies with 50 shots, 33 on the starter who played 29:25.

Tisdale Trojans downed the Red Deer Rebels, #2 in the Alberta South division, 2-1.

The Austrian nationals edged the Calgary Buffaloes 3-2 in the final game of Day 1.
