The team most concede has the most individual talent, leads the pack after the opening round robin and quarter-finals of this year’s Challenge Cup minor bantam competition.

The Vancouver Select Blue battled a determined Jr. Steelers team to a second overtime 4-3 win Saturday afternoon to take the top seed into the quarter-finals. NSWC center Jackson Leppard got the winner.

The Blue had earlier opened with a 13-0 steam-rolling of the Grande Prairie Jr. Storm, and followed up a 6-3 win over the North American Young Guns.

They then faced the eighth seeded North American Young Guns in the quarter finals Sunday morning, and blasted the Young Guns 10-0.

The Select are looking to make a statement after a disappointing 7th of 8 finish at the Bauer Toronto tournament recently.

The Vancouver Monarchs finished in second place, and faced seventh seed Vancouver Dragons in the quarter, downing them 5-1 to advance to the semis.

The Monarchs had battled the NW Giants to a 4-3 OT/shootout win in game one Friday, then downed the Dragons 5-1 and the BC Outlaws 5-2 on Saturday. The Dragons had grabbed the seventh seed on the basis of an 5-3 empty net win over the NW Giants in their final game of the round robin.

The Jr. Steelers ended up in the third seed, after opening round winners of 5-2 vs the BC Northern Selects, and 6-3 vs the Vancouver Snipers, only to face the Snipers again in the quarters, downing them a second time, 5-1. They will face #2 seed Monarchs in the semis Saturday evening.

The Snipers had finished in sixth spot with an 1-2-0 record, by virtue of a 4-1 win over last place GP Storm along with 5-3 loss to the NA Young Guns in their opener.

The BC Outlaws who had finished as the fourth seed with a 2-1-0 record, downed the Northern Selects 4-2 Saturday morning to advance to the semis, where they’ll meet the Blue Select.

The Outlaws had earlier beaten the Dragons 4-1 in their opener Friday, then downed the NW Jr Giants 4-3 with a late game goal Saturday morning, before falling to 5-2 to the Monarchs in their final round game.

The Northern Selects had opened with a 5-2 loss to the Steelers, and a 6-4 loss to cross-border rival Grande Prairie Storm, before downing the Young Guns 4-0 in their final round game to clinch the fifth seed.

The NW Jr. Giants will face the GP Storm in the consolation game.

After winning the Pacific Spring Showcase, where they advanced on ties with the Monarchs and Outlaws and a tight win over the Jr. Steelers, the Giants were the other end of the close ones in this round robin.
