Game 2, Thursday, Oct. 29

Team BC bounced back from an opening 6-3 loss to Alberta on Wednesday, with a 4-2 win over Manitoba on last night at the 2015 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup in Calgary. Manitoba came into the game looking for their second consecutive win, after edging Saskatchewan 4-3 in their opener.

BC defenceman Kabir Gill (NSWC Bantam, Valley West Hawks MM) opened the scoring early in the first as his point shot found its way through a maze of legs and into the back of the net.

Manitoba would even the score shortly after when forward Justin Nachbaur picked up a loose puck and tucked in a rebound. Gill then netted his second goal of the game on a power play one-timer that beat Manitoba goaltender Duncan McGovern. Shots were 11-9 in favour of BC heading into the middle frame.

In the second period, another D, Luke Zazula (Delta HA Bantam, Delta Prep CSSHL) scored a second power play goal midway through the frame to extend BC’s lead to 3-1. Zazula then rifled a high wrist shot for his second goal of the game as BC closed out the period with a solid 4-1 lead.

Halfway through the third period, BC shifted their style of play to a conservative approach and Manitoba was able to finally strike as Samuel Stewart scored to make the score 4-2.

Manitoba pulled the netminder for the extra attacker but weren’t able to close the gap.

Manitoba edged BC in shots on goal by a 26-24 margin. Liam Kindree had two assists for BC, Donovan Buskey (NSWC Bantam, Midget A1) got the start .

Kamloops Blazers prospect Luke Zazula and Moose Jaw Warriors prospect Jett Woo from Manitoba were named the Players of the Game.

In the loss Wednesday (Oct. 28), BC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a deflection by Liam Kindree (NSWC Bantam, NW Giants) off a point shot from defenceman Ethan Cap (NSWC Bantam, NW Giants) and then on a short-handed partial breakaway by Luka Burzan ((NSWC Bantam, Valley West Hawks).

Alberta then got on the board when Josh Tarzwell (Red Deer White Bantam, Chiefs Midget AAA) scored off the rush to cut BC’s lead to 2-1. Despite being outshot 17-4, BC carried a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

BC restored their two goal lead early in the second, when Jackson Leppard (NSWC Bantam, NW Giants) snapped the puck by Alberta netminder Carl Stankowski .

But that would the end of the scoring for BC, as Alberta stormed back with five straight to take the win 6-3, and dominate on the shot clock.

Goals from forwards Josh Prokop (CAC Bantam, Northern Alberta Extreme E15) and Nicholas Bowman (Sherwood Park Flyers Bantam, SP Ennis Kings Midget) tied the game 3-3 at the end of the second. Shots on goal were 28-13 for Alberta.

Lloydminster’s Chase Wouters (Heat Bantam, Rage Minor Midget) then scored an unassisted goal in a scramble in front of the BC goal to give Alberta a 4-3 lead just minutes into third.

Bowman later potted his second, wiring a slap shot past BC goaltender Donovan Buskey, who had replaced starter Jordan Naylor after the fourth goal. Prokop then also scored his second, finishing off a tic-tac-toe play to end the scoring at 6-3.

Alberta forward Spencer Moe (Calgary Bisons Bantam, Buffaloes Midget) and BC defenceman and captain, Ethan Cap were named the Players of the Game.
