The BCHL Penticton Vees have advanced to the semi finals in the Western Canada Cup, after defeating the Melfort Mustangs 3-1 Wednesday night.
The Vees took a 2-0 lead into the third on markers from Dakota Conroy and Patrick Newell before Melfort’s Tristan Frei scored with about six minutes left in the third.
An empty netter by Connor Chartier sealed the win for the Vees, who outshot the Mustangs 40-23.
The game was notable in that only one penalty was called, to the Vees Chartier in the first period.
The Vees now advance to the semis with a 3-1-0 record, in first place at the moment. The other four teams will play Thursday.
The Portage Terriers (2-1-0) will face the Spruce Grove Saints, who have been eliminated (0-3-0), and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons (2-1-0) will face the Melford Mustangs (1-2-0).
The tournament winner will advance to the Royal Bank Cup to play for the national Junior A championship.
