BCMML – at Mac’s – BC 3W-2L in Day 1

Five BCMML teams are competing in the 2017 Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament, in Calgary, Alberta.

The tournament has been running since 1978 and attracts top teams from across Western Canada and the USA, plus a few select clubs from Europe, including national teams from Hungary and Belarus this year.

Here’s a quick overview of the round robin schedules for the five BC teams. The teams were selected on the basis of their Top 5 league standing in early November.

The Valley West Hawks are currently the number 1 team in the BCMML, a position they have held for the past four weeks.

The Hawks are currently 20-3-1-0 OTL, with 143 GF – 62 GA, 397 PIM.

The Hawks open Boxing Day vs Airdrie CFR Bisons, then face Regina Pat Canadians, December 27; Calgary North Stars, December 28; and wrap the round robin vs Ontario Jr. Reign on December 30.

Day 1 Update: Hawks win opener 5-3 vs Airdrie (#9 AMHL South,  7-15-2). Max Mohagen player of the game.

 

 

 

 

The Cariboo Cougars, who represent North Central British Columba are currently in second place in the BCMML.

The team is 19-4-1-0 OTL, with a 118 GF – 69 GA record, 370 PIM.

The Cougars opened the Mac’s on Boxing Day with a 10-0 Winn vs the Carolina Junior Hurricanes.

They play Swift Current Legionnaires, December 27; Knights of Columbus Pats, December 28; and wrap the round robin vs Calgary Buffaloes December 29.

Day 1 Update: Cougars open with 10-0 win vs Carolina. Score was 1-0 after first, 9-0 after second.

Brennan Algunas was 1G-1A, Mason Richey 1G-2A, Craig MacDonald 3A. Brett Funder and Brendan Pigeon were 1G-1A. Marcus Allen stopped 14 shots. Shots were 33-14.

 

 

 

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds are currently in third place of the BCMML, with a record of 16-6-1-1 OTL, with 113 GF – 75 GA, 500 PIM.

Fraser Valley played their first game at the Mac’s on Boxing Day vs the Hungarian National U18 team winning 7-2.

They face St. Albert Raiders December 28, Calgary Royals December 29, and finish their round robin vs the Tisdale Trojans December 30.

Day 1 Update: T-Birds win their opener 7-2 vs the Hungarian National U18. Was 4-0 after first,  5-1 after second. Justin Plett with hat trick, Jackson Mainse with 2G. Harkirat Gill and Ethan Bowen 1G-1A. Dawson Pelletier with win.

 

 

 

The Vancouver Giants are currently tied in 5th place of the BCMML with the Greater Vancouver Canadians.

The NW Giants are 12-9-0-1 OTL after 22 games, with an 80 GF vs 71 GA record.

The Giants opened their Mac’s in Calgary Boxing Day with a 11-2 loss vs defending champion Belarus National U17s.

The Giants meet Red Deer Optimist Chiefs, December 28; Saskatoon Contacts, December 29; and wrap the round robin vs Calgary Flames December 30.

Day 1 Update: NW Giants fell 11-2 to defending champion Belarus National U17s in game 1. Shots were 39-11 Belarus. Belarus with four power play and two short-handed goals. 4-1, 8-1, 11-2 peiord scores. NW goals by Matteo Pecchia and Jason Chu.

 

 

 

Greater Vancouver Canadians are currently tied with the NW Giants in 5th place of the BCMML.

GVC are 12-11-0-1 OTL, 94 GF vs 82 GA.

Greater Vancouver opened their Mac’s tourney Boxing Day with a 6-1 loss vs the Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers.

GVC meet Prince Albert Mintos, December 28; New York Jr. Islanders, December 29; and finish the round robin vs Lethbridge Hurricanes December 30.

Day 1 Update: GVC lose their opener 6-1 vs Okotoks (#7 AMML South 12-8-4), shots were 31-22 GVC. Tyler Hostmann with lone GVC marker. Was 1-0 after first, 4-1 after second.
