BCMML Week 16 – Hawks cling to first place after split with NWG

in regular season

January 31, 2017

After Week 16 in BC Major Midget League, the Valley West Hawks remain in first place, but barely, after a split with the NW Giants.

#2 Cariboo Cougars won both of their games, and now a nipping at the Hawks, just a single point back.

Fraser Valley T-Birds are eight points back of the Cougars, in third place, while the NW Giants, Greater Vancouver Canadians and Okanagan Rockets are now locked in a tie for fourth place, six back of the T-Birds.

The NE Chiefs, North Island, Kootenay and Thompson are all battling it out for the 7-10 spots. The South Island Royals trail the Blazers by 10, in last place.

Leaders – Re-cap

The Valley West Hawks – in a repeat of last week – won their first game, 6-4 EN vs the North West Giants, and then dropped game two, 3-2, in a thriller. They are now just one up on the Cougars, who put up a couple of easy wins vs the South Island Royals, (6-3 and 8-3).

In game one, the Hawks Max Mogahen put up a pair of goals, while Justin Sourdiff was 1G-2A. Tyler Cristal was 1G-1A for the Giants. Nik Hoem took the loss, while Josh Dias got the win.

In game two, Jacob Fournier got a pair for the Giants early in the third to break a scoreless tie. Cooper Connell gave the Giants some breathing room, with the 3-1 goal with 3:47 left. The Hawks battled back though with a late goal from Trevor Isaksson to finish the scoring. Nik Hoem got the win, and Jayden Shull took the loss.

Fraser Valley Thunderbirds remain in third place but are now eight back of the #2 Cougars, after a bye weekend. The T-Birds are still six up on the next three teams.

Second Tier

Things are heating up up for the next three teams, who won five out of six games over the weekend. All are now tied in fourth place, with 34 points.

The North West Giants split their series with the #1 Hawks, while both the Greater Vancouver Canadians and Okanagan Rockets moved up into a tie with the Giants, with a couple of wins each. Both the Giants and the Rockets have two games in hand on GVC.

GVC edged the NE Chiefs 4-3 in game one and then won 6-1 in game two.

The Rockets won two one-goal games, 4-3 and 3-2 vs the gritty Kootenay Ice to add four points to their total, and move up into the tie with the Giants.

Third Tier

Four teams are battling it out in the next four spots. The NE Chiefs remain in 7th spot this week, but are now 10 back of the Rockets and only two up on the North Island Silvertips. Kootenay Ice are now four back of the Chiefs, and the Thompson Blazers are five back.

The South Island Royals are still in last place, in spite of another close game vs a top team this weekend.
