BCMML Week 5 – Super tight at the top

in regular season

October 24, 2017

Week 5 of the  BCMML schedule wrapped up on the weekend, with 10 teams seeing action. This week North West Giants had the bye week.

Heading into the weekend, four teams were tightly packed at the top of the league. The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds were in first place with 13 points, one up on the Valley West Hawks and Northwest Giants.

The Cariboo Cougars were a point back in fourth place, with a 5-2-1-0 record.

Two other teams were close to the top runners. The OK Rockets were three points behind the Cougars, tied at 8 points with GVC.

So, how did things turn out with the Giants idle and the remaining Top 3 battling it out for the honors, and with GVC and OK Rockets hot on their heels?

Well – three teams swept to move up in the standings: Cariboo, GVC and Vancouver NE Chiefs. The result is there are now six teams tightly packed in the top tier, and three more nipping at their heels.

Cariboo won two at home vs Thompson, 5-2 on Saturday and 6-1 on Sunday, and are now in first place with 15 points.

The VW Hawks, who were on the road with a depleted roster, edged Kooteney 5-4 in Trail on Saturday, then lost their first game of the year, 4-3 on Sunday, are now a point behind the Cougars, alone in second place.

GVC also swept – downing former first place Fraser Valley 6-2 in Abby and then 4-0 at home in Richmond, and are now tied with NW Giants in fourth spot with 12 points. The Giants however, have two games in hand on GVC, the T-Birds and the Cougars.

With the two losses, the T-birds slipped to third place, one up on the Giants.

In the other sweep, NE Chiefs downed South Island at home in Victoria 4-2 on Friday, and then 7-1 in on Saturday. The Chiefs are now a point back of the OK Rockets in seventh place, with a 3-4-1-2 OTL record.

North Island shut out the Okanagan Rockets 4-0 in game one at the Nanaimo Ice Centre on Friday, and then dropped a 7-5 decision in the rematch Saturday in Lake Cowichan.

With the two points the Rockets are now in sixth place, two points back of GVC, with two games in hand, and two points back of the the 4th place Giants – with one less win.
