Burnaby Winter Club’s Academy teams were on the road to Wisconsin last week – and stranded by a blizzard on Super Bowl Sunday to make the trip home that much more memorable.
Both the E18 and E15 teams made the trip, with the E18s striking out in 3 games vs Madison Capitals U18 team, and the E15s winning two and losing one vs Madison Capitals U16s, made up of mostly 1998 and some 1999s, ending their winning streak this season at 26.
The trip exposed the boys to NCAA and High School hockey in one of America’s hockey hotbeds – and opened their minds to the possibilities of big time US college hockey, and the importance of making sure their grades are good.
The trip was a homecoming of sorts for BWC Hockey Directory, Mako Balkovec, who played for the Badgers 24 years ago – see pic below, one of several BC boys who’ve been part of Big Red over the past two decades. Balkovec stayed in Wisconsin after his playing days and ran successful High School hockey programs, winning two state championships, before returning to BC two years ago to head up BWC hockey programs.
