Two of the top Peewee teams in BC are off to the famed Quebec Peewee Tournament again this year, to compete in a huge tournament that features the majority of the top-ranked AAA teams in North America, along with dozens more in AA and A divisions.
Approximately 2,600 players compete in the tournament, which is held each year during the Quebec Carnival.
The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins are the #1 club in the PCAHA again this year, with a regular season record of 19-1-0, 148 GF vs 14 GA while rival North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks are ranked #3 with a 13-4-1 record, 78 GF and 47 GA.
This year the AAA division includes 24 American teams, six Quebec teams, two Ontario teams, and one Finnish team, in addition to the two BC teams.
North Shore play their first game vs the Gatineau Olympiques, at 3:30 pm EST Friday, while BWC play at 8:00 am EST (5:00 am PST!) Saturday vs the South Shore Kings, a team from Foxborough, in the Boston area.
A unique feature of the tournament is that all teams play their first game in the Colisee. And, as long as they keep winning, they continue to play in the Colisee.
Another unique feature is the knock-out format. A team can lose their first game, and head to the left (losers) side of the draw, and come out of it, as long as they keep winning, to meet the winner coming through on the right (winners) side of the draw. So win the first one, lose the second, and you’re out of the tournament. Keep winning, and you’re always in the Colisee, and you’ll eventually be in the gold medal game on February 21.
An elaborate system of exhibition games are held for all the teams that are knocked out early, ensuring a good time, and good competition for all the teams over the ten day stretch.
Of course, for the West Coast teams, the snow and the cold are a real novelty.
Pin trading is the other big feature of the tournament, with professional pin traders lining the concourses of the Colisee and kids swapping pins all week long.
Here are the rosters for the two BC teams.
