Atom hockey gets the late start in the Lower Mainland, starting about a week after the rest of the rep teams get underway in mid November.

The other key difference in Atom hockey is that the leagues are split into a Greater Vancouver division and Fraser Valley division, and don’t play any interlocking league games.

To further complicate things, some jurisdictions, such as Kamloops, don’t tier their teams until Peewee.

So it’s always difficult to compare teams in Atom, unless the teams play some tournament action.

Nevertheless, BWC Atom teams typically are among the strongest in the province. This year, the Bruins are again keeping that tradition going strong.

BWC Atom A1

This team is way out in front of their division after six games, posting a perfect record, and 56 GF and just 8 GA for 18 points. The A1s have yet to face second place Seafair A1 (4-0-1), their brother A2s in third place, or North Shore (2-2-1), but at the moment, with nine point lead on Seafair, look very formidable, and likely to finish first.

BWC Atom A2

At the moment it’s looking like BWC A2 Bruins could finish right behind the A1s in this top division. Along with NSWC A2s, they are the only A2s competing in the top flight. With an undefeated record of 2-0-2, the A2 Bruins are just two points off second place Seafair A1, who they tied 3-3 Dec 5, and have a game in hand. They downed NSWC A1s 4-2 Nov 23.

BWC Atom A3

The Atom A3s have only played two games so far, both losses, so are near the bottom of Flight 2 at the moment. The losses have come against second place Seafair A2 (5-2) and third place T-Birds A2 (4-1), so the team is still in good position to improve their place in the standings over the next few games. There are  three A3 teams in the division, three A2s and one A1 team.

BWC Atom A4

This year the Atom A4s are playing in Flight 3, against a mix of two A1 teams, two A2 teams, one A3 team and one other A4 team. And they’re doing well, with a .500 record in five games (2-2-1). If not for the loss of two sportsmanship points, the team would be tied for third with New West A1s.

BWC Atom A5

BWC is one of only two associations in the Lower Mainland to ice five reps teams in Atom. Vancouver T-Birds are the other one. Like the A4s, A5s are also competing against some A1 and A2 teams, as well as North Van and Burnaby’s A3s and the T-Birds A5s. So far the team has played 4 games, with a win and three losses. So the team is doing well considering the competition their facing.
