Host BWC Bantam A2 Bruins, a team made up of all but four first year players, came up big in their final round robin game against a big, fast team from Campbell River, scoring a decisive 6-2 win to finish first in Pool A at the 5th Annual BWC Remembrance Day Bantam A2 tournament.

The win sets up a semi-final match up against the Portland Winterhawks, who finished second in Pool B.

The Bruins finished with an undefeated 3-0-1 record, while the Delta Hockey Academy Varsity team finished 2-0-2 for second place in Pool A.

DHA had tied Campbell River 4-4 and BWC 2-2 earlier in the round robin. They will now face Vancouver Eastside (aka Vancouver Minor) who finished first in Pool B with a record of 3-0-1, tying Portland 3-3.

The BWC game vs Campbell River was expected to be much closer, but the Tyees were hammered by the BWC power play, which scored 4 times. The Bruins played a solid team game, with balanced production from Arshdeep Bains, Michael Martino, Christian Buono (2), Alek Sukunda and Justin Scott.

In Pool B, the decisive game pitted Vancouver against the North Shore Winter Club. Vancouver got off to a quick start, outshooting the Winterhawks 14-5 in the first, but had only a 1-0 lead to show at the end of the first.

It was more of the same in the second, as Vancouver continued to dominate on the shot clock, 11-6, but were unable to solve Hawks goalie Michael Harroch. Ryan Taylo-Kuipers finally put the Eastside ahead 2-0 on a nice bit of stick-handling and a deke early in the third.

North Shore then battled back to close the game to 2-1 when Jarett Raymond scored five hold on a nice feed from Kyle Jennings two shifts later.

The goal gave the Hawks a big boost and shifted the momentum with the Hawks firing 13 shots at Vancouver tender Jesse Makaj. But they couldn’t beat the tall stopper and the game ended with a couple of empty netters from the neutral zone.

Portland advanced on a 5-1 win vs OHA in their opener, and two ties, 4-4 vs NSWC and 3-3 vs Vancouver, before being surpassed by West Kelowna 5-2 in their final round robin game.
