Burnaby Winter Club teams have been at or near the top of every division of minor hockey in the Lower Mainland for decades.
This season is no different, with the Burnaby based private club placing 5 teams in the top 3 of their respective groups at the end of the 8 game pre-season placement round which ended Monday.
At the Peewee level, the A1 Bruins finished in first place with a 7-0-1-(5 spt) record, a point above NSWC A1, who placed second in spite of a 4-2-2 record due to a perfect 8 sportsmanship points. In third place, Seafair, who were the only team to beat the Bruins, also with a 7-0-1 record, but with only 3 sporties. Seafair lost their last game of the placement 1-0 to Langley. A win would have put them in first place.
The Peewee A2s finished also with a 7-0-1 record, and 7 sporties, but finished second by a point behind Hollyburn A1s (7-0-1-(7 spt). Hollyburn’s lone tie was a 4-4 game with Seattle Junior PW A1. BWC A2s sole loss was a 3-2 decision to Hollyburn in their final game. The Bruins handled Seattle 5-2.
The Peewee A3s meanwhile finished in 7th place in Group 3, with one win, two ties and five losses. However, but for an 11-1 blowout loss against Chilliwack A1s, the A3s were solidly in three of their other four losses, losing by a goal or two. It’s almost certain that Chilliwack and the other two top teams in Group 3, North Van A1 and North Delta A1, will move up a group. So the BWC A3s will probably stay in Group 3 once regular season begins Nov. 11 and be very competitive in the new group.
The A4 group meanwhile finished 1-6-1, with 22 GF vs 61 GA in Group 7 and could drop a group once the dust settles.
