BWC Needs OT in Four Consecutive Games

Sept 29, 2013 –

The Burnaby Winter Club E-15 team’s results over the weekend show just how tight the Canadian Sports Schools Hockey League standings could be this season.

On Sunday, they faced off against cross town rivals Delta Hockey Academy. Leading 2-1 after the second period on goals by Spencer Hunter and Kyle Henderson, BWC was unable to defend the slim margin and found themselves tied 2-2 as the third period ended. For the fourth time in as many games, they would need overtime to determine a winner.

While BWC had been victorious in two of those opportunities, they were unable to secure a third overtime winner. The single point in the loss, however, did propel them momentarily into a tie for first place in the CSSHL standings. They now hold a record of 2W-0L-2OTL.

Coach Leland Mack reflected on the razor thin difference between victory and defeat and the lessons that his players might be able to gain from this weekend’s experience.

“It is a very competitive league and our four OT games are proof,” said Mack. “We need to learn how to close out and win. We gave up three 3rd period leads this weekend and we only scored one 3rd period goal in those four games. That’s not good enough. We have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks until the Yale Showcase.”

That series of games begins on October 11th in Pitt Meadows. Between Friday and Sunday, BWC will face Banff, Yale, Okanagan and Delta.
