Burnaby Winter Club A1 teams have swept the top Flight of Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association from Atom through Bantam for the 2016-2017 regular season.
The Bantam A1 team lead the way, with a perfect winning record of 20-0-0, and 17 sportsmanship points, for 57 points overall. The Bantam Bruins scored 114 goals for vs just 18 goals against, for an average score of 5.7 – 0.9 per game.
The Bruins’ toughest competition came from long time rival North Shore Winter Club, who bounced back from a 3-0 shut out in their league opener, to press the Bruins in a pair of 3-2 decisions. North Shore however would finish fourth overall, with a 12-7-1 record, behind Seafair and Burnaby Minor.
Seafair, who finished with a 11-5-4 record, also bounced back in their final game vs the Bruins, dropping a tough 1-0 decision in game 19, after getting spanked in game 1, 7-0, in BWC’s second game of the season, and 6-1 in late December.
The BWC Peewee A1s meanwhile, finished on top of a very competitive Peewee division, with a record of 16-1-3 and 18 sporties, for 53 points, to edge out Abbotsford, by a single point. Abby actually won two more games, and, although they lost one more, would have finished a point ahead of BWC if not for posting two fewer sporties (30 more PIMs).
The BWC Peewee A1 had to battle hard all season. Although the team’s average game score was 4.15 – 1.9, they ground their way through no fewer than seven one goal games, vs Langley (2x), Seafair (2x), Cloverdale, NSWC, and Vancouver T-Birds. And they scratched out three draws – to Semiahmoo 1-1, Langley 4-4 and North Vancouver 1-1.
BWC also had the only Peewee A2 team in the top flight, who finished 8th out of 12 teams.
BWC’s Atom A1 racked up an impressive 18-2-0, 16 spts record to finish two points up on perennial rival NSWC at 15-2-3, 17 spts. The Bruins beat the Winterhawks in two of their three matchups, 5-1 in the first one, 7-2 in the second, before dropping game three, 2-0, the only game in which they failed to score. The Bruins only other loss was a 6-4 loss to the T-Birds in game three, in mid-November.
The BWC Atom A1s scored 151 goals vs 38 against, for a 7.55 – 1.9 average game score. Other than the two losses, the Bruins were only tested once more, in a 4-2 win over Burnaby Minor. Third place Seafair were 15 points back of the Bruins.
As in Peewee Tier 1, BWC Atom A2s also played in the Top Flight; finishing 5th with an 8-12-0 record.
Here’s how things finished in the three A1 divisions, PCAHA regular season.
