The Caribou Cougars, BC Major Midget League leaders, battled many of the top teams in Western Canada at the Macs Tournament in Calgary this week, and capped it off with 2-1 double overtime Gold Medal win vs the Regina Pat Canadians on New Years Day.
Chase Dubois got the winner, while Cougars goaltender Griffen Outhouse stopped 45 of 47 shots and was awarded game MVP.
Both the Cougars and the Canadians finished the round robin with 3-1-0 records, in second place in their pools.
The Cougars had lost to 4-0-0 Calgary North Stars 4-2 in their second game of the tourney; while the Canadians had dropped a 5-1 decision to the 4-0-0 Calgary Buffaloes in their final round robin game.
In the quarter finals the Cougars downed 4-0-0 German National U17s 5-1, and then defeated the 5-0-0 Calgary Buffaloes 5-4 in overtime in the semi. Justin Almeida got the OT winner, plus one in the game.
The Canadians meanwhile, prevented an all BC Final by downing the Vancouver NW Giants 3-2 in a double overtime semi – Shane Kime and Keegan Jones had scored for the Giants, Connor Chalk got the winner for Regina.
The Giants had advanced with a 4-0 quarter final win over 4-0-0 Calgary North Stars, after finishing first in their pool with 3-0-1 record, to finish 4-1-1.
The other BC teams did not fare so well.
The Valley West Hawks were 1-1-2, the Vancouver North East Chiefs were 1-2-1, while the Okanagan Rockets went 0-4-0.
