BWC’s Midget Prep team fared pretty well against some stiff competition last weekend. The team played three games at the Summit Centre in Abbotsford, and all three opponents were among the best in the division.
It was a rocky start with a 4-0 loss to OHA Edmonton (10-3-0) on Friday, though OHA was on fire, winning all three of their games with 17 goals for and only seven against. Burnaby actually held the slight edge in shots in the game, 28-27, but couldn’t solve goaltender Kanwar Gill. OHA Edmonton is now 2nd in the division.
BWC’s offence bounced back on Saturday against Rink (7-2-0). They scored five goals on Rink’s goalie Tyler Brennan, who had only allowed six goals in his previous four games combined. It wasn’t enough for a win though – Rink won the game 6-5 in overtime in what was a back and forth game. Rink looked to have pulled a third period comeback, but Skyler Cameron scored with 17 seconds left to get the game to overtime.
BWC was able to pick up a 4-3 shootout win on Sunday against a very strong Northern Alberta (8-2-2) team that features some strong offensive threats, including top prospect for the 2022 NHL Draft, Matthew Savoie. It was a big comeback for BWC, who were down 3-0 early but battled back to win the game. Goaltender Thomas Milic was excellent for Burnaby, stopping 33 of 36 shots plus all three Northern Alberta shooters in the shootout. Nico Marini got the shootout winner.
BWC is still in good shape after the 1-1-1 weekend, now sitting fifth in the Midget Prep Division with a 8-3-2 record. It seems as though the top five teams, as well as Rink (who have only played nine games) are pulling away from the rest of the division.
