With two lop-sided wins vs PoE this past weekend, BWC moved back into a first place tie with Delta at the top of the CSSHL Midget Prep division. BWC is now 21-1-1, with a +77 GF-GA differential.
Although tied with BWC, Delta have two more losses, at 21-3-1. They are also posting a big +70 GF-GA diff.
Delta played just one game on the weekend, a 5-1 win over #13 West Van at Hollyburn, and have now wrapped up the first half.
BWC will finish with a 12:15 pm game Friday vs Yale at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.
It will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams – Yale are in third place, with a record of 18-5-2. Yale losses were to OHA Edmonton, OHA Red (2x), Pacific Coast and Shawnigan Lake.
Yale also played just one game on the weekend, posting a 5-2 win vs PoE on Friday, before PoE faced BWC Saturday and Sunday.
Here’s a recap of the weekend games for the Top 3 teams.
BWC 11- POE 0
BWC thumped an injury ridden Pursuit of Excellence club, 11-0 on Saturday, and 9-2 on Sunday in two games at Burnaby Winter Club.
On Saturday, BWC fired 47 shots at Varsity call-up Jordan Belly, scoring three in the first, six in the second and two in the third.
BWC were 5-14 on the power play. PoE were 0-18.
Kalen Szeto had a big game with a hat trick and three assists, one better than Sean Donaldson’s 3G-2A. Kent Johnson had six assists. Elan Bar-Lev-Wise was 2-G-1A. Stephen Castagna, Tom Sweeney and Jack McIntosh got the other goals.
Nick Lee got the shut out, stopping 18.
BWC 9 – POE 2
It was more of the same in the rematch Sunday morning. Regular starter, first year Talyn Boyko held PoE in the game over the first 16 minutes, allowing just one goal on 17 shots, but left the game with a leg injury.
Jordon Belley finished up, stopping 35 of 42. BWC totaled 59 shots.
BWC notched three in the first, four in the second, and two in the third.
Seven Burnaby shooters scored. Kent Johnson and Elan Bar-Lev-Wide got two each, with singles by Cam Chin, Ryan Helliwell, Tom Sweeney, callup Mattias Hohlweg and Jack McIntosh. Bar-Lev-Wise was also 2A while D-man Nick Bochen was 3A.
BWC was 1-9 on the power play. PoE were 0-8.
Kaden Freer-Lane stopped 22-24.
Delta 5 – West Van 1
This one started slowly, with Delta scoring short-handed (Cole Shepard, unassisted), for the only goal in the first Saturday evening at Hollyburn.
Shots were 18-12 Delta; with Delta serving four straight minor penalities through the first half of the period.
It was all Delta in the second and third periods, as they outshoot West Van 15-4 and 14-7, scoring two goals in each frame.
Keegan Craik got a pair. Buddy Johnson and Riley Wallack got the other two. Shepard, Corson Hopwo, and Krz Plummer each had 2A as well.
Cade Cavallini got the lone West Van goal, with helpers from Ryan MacLean and Tristan Fraser.
Johnny Derrick stopped 42 of 47 for West Van. Geo Wilson was 22/23 for Delta.
Yale 5 – PoE 2
In their game vs PoE last Friday afternoon at MSA in Abbotsford, Yale opened a 1-0 lead early in the first, on a goal by Tyson Phare. Shots were 12-11 PoE.
PoE then went up 2-1. Kjell Kjemhus scored first on a power play goal midway through the second, then Raymond Speerbrecker scored at even strength with 6:51 left.
But that would be it for PoE scoring.
Yale came back with two late in the second to retake the lead, 3-2, on goals from Arjun Raman and Alex Cotton.
Shots were 14-6 for Yale in the period.
Yale finished with two early goals in the third to seal it 5-2. Holden Kodak scored at 18:18 and followed by Scout Truman on the power play at 16:25.
