Midget Prep Division Playoffs

Playoffs for the top division of the Canadian Sports School Hockey League get underway Wednesday, March 14 in Penticton.

This year the league has changed up the playoff format for the Midget Prep Division, and 12 rather than 8 teams, will be compete for the league Championship.

Teams will playoff in 3 Pools of 4 teams in a round robin format to begin. The top teams in each Pool, plus one wild card team, will then advance to a one game semi-final, on Saturday, March 17, with the winners advancing to the Final on Sunday.

The top 3 teams are placed at the top of each pool, with remaining seeds placed as follows: 1-6-7-12; 2-5-8-11; and 3-4-9-10.

 

First Round Prognosis:

Pool A

 

 

BWC are the heavy favorites in Pool A. The team has won 24 straight games, posting just one loss and one SOL in the regular season, both to Delta, October 28 and 29.

However, the team faced some adversity early, winning in a shootout to Rink in September, and edging OHA Red 2-1, and winning in a shootout 4-3 vs Northern Alberta, in October.

Since then their closest contests have been just two one goal games –  vs Rink 5-4 November 26, and vs OHA White 4-3 February 28.

BWC have scored 259 goals vs 72 against, which is both the highest number of goals for, and lowest number of goals against.

BWC records vs Pool opponents:

vs NAX: 2 wins – 1 SOW (4-3, October 6), then 5-3, November 25

vs Shawingan, 3 Wins, 16 GF – 6 GA, 5-2 September 15, 6-1 January 11, 5-3 January 26.

vs Pursuit, 3 Wins, 25 GF – 2 GA

Pool B

 

 

Rink are the top seed in Pool B, finishing two wins ahead of Yale in the regular season standings.  In their matchups during the season, Rink had trouble with Yale, losing game one 3-2 in a shoot out October 29 and losing game two, 5-3 on February 10.

Rink also pressed the other top BC teams early, falling to Delta 3-2 in their first game September 29, and losing 6-5 in a shootout to BWC the following day.

So expect a close battle vs the BC representative in their playoff matchup.

In their games vs Edge, Rink won three of four contests, outscoring them 18-7.

Rink downed IHA in all four league games, outscoring them 21-7.

Pool C

Delta and OHA Red finished the regular season tied with 55 points, but Delta advanced as the top seed in Pool C, on the basis of one more win.

Overall, Delta’s offence is 30 goals higher than OHA Red’s, while their defense also holds a 6 goals against advantage.

In head to head games, however, OHA Red have the big advantage, winning all three match-ups, 4-2 on September 30, then 4-2 and 2-1, February 10-11.

Delta won both games vs OHA Edmonton (8-1 and 2-1) and all three games vs Pacific Coast (3-1, September 16 and then 4-3 and 5-4 OT. on January 20-21.

OHA Red split their two game series vs OHA Edmonton, and won both games vs Shawnigan Lake.
