CSSHL Midget Prep Stretch Run Heats Up

in Other News, regular season

February 21, 2017

Only a handful of CSSHL Midget Prep games were played this past weekend, and now the standings at the top are tighter than ever.

Three teams are tied in second place with 37 points. Just four points separate the 2nd through 6th place teams; and only six points separate 2nd through 8th.

Teams in ninth (Rink) and tenth (Shawnigan Lake) theoretically are also still in the mix for a Top 8 finish and a slot into the Championship playoff round. Rink is currently two points out of 8th, and Shawnigan is four points out.

Here’s an overview of current leaders and results from this past weekend, followed by a look ahead at the schedules for the leaders and mostly likely outcomes over the final six to eight league games (teams play 30 total).

Status after the past weekend:

First place Delta played a lone game this weekend, picking up a point in a high scoring 7-6 overtime loss versus Yale, who are now on a five game winning streak, and just five points back of Delta with three games in hand.

In the game Saturday, Delta opened a three goal lead after the first, before Yale answered with three to close out the second 4-3 Delta. This set up a wild third, that saw Yale tie it up three times, finally making it 6-6 with 7:29 to go. Sean McCloskey finally put it away for Yale in OT. Shots were 44-35 for Delta.

OHA Red were idle this past weekend. They’re four points back of Delta in the points standings, but have four games in hand, and are in first place in terms of winning percentage.

Edge, in third place and tied with OHA Red at 37 points – also played a single game on the weekend, downing Northern Alberta 4-1.

Fourth place Yale also played just one game this past weekend. As mentioned above they downed Delta in OT, and are now tied with OHA Red and Edge with 37 points.

BWC is in fifth place overall in the points standings, with 35, just two back of OHA Red, Edge and Yale. BWC played a pair of home games on the weekend but failed to gain any ground, after a split vs Shawnigan Lake. In terms of winning percentage BWC has slipped to seventh place. They edged Shawnigan Lake 4-3 in game one, then lost 5-2 (EN) in the rematch Sunday.

Northern Alberta is a point behind BWC in sixth place, with 34, but have a game in hand. As noted above NAX lost their sole weekend game, 4-1 vs Edge.

Pursuit are next in the standings in seventh spot, with 33 pts, but have a game in hand on Northern Alberta, and two on BWC. Pursuit did not play this past weekend.

OHA White are currently in the final #8 playoff spot with 31 pts, and have two games in hand on BWC and Delta. White played three away games vs Rink this weekend,  losing 5-4 in OT Friday, winning 2-1 in OT Saturday and then dropping the rubber match 5-1 on Sunday.
