CSSHL – Strong season for all BWC Academy teams

in Other News, regular season, playoffs

April 4, 2019

Overview

The 2018-19 season was a strong one for Burnaby Winter Club’s Academy teams.

All four of BWC’s academy teams were among the best in their respective divisions all season long. The Midget Preps and Elite 15’s both took home banners for BWC for winning their division.

In the playoffs, the Elite 15 and Bantam Varsity teams each won silver medals for their performance in the CSSHL Championships that took place from March 7-17 in Penticton.

All combined, BWC’s four academy teams posted an incredible record of 101-19-12!

Midget Prep

Season Record: 30-4-2, 1st in division

Playoffs: Out in semifinals

In the highest level of play the CSSHL has to offer, BWC’s Midget Preps battled for top spot all season long with Shawnigan (30-5-1) and Edge (28-4-4).

Catching Shawnigan seemed like a long shot at one point, but BWC won 11 straight games to end the season while Shawnigan lost two of their final four. That gave BWC the regular season banner.

Playoffs for this group didn’t go as smoothly as the regular season.

After going 2-1 in round robin to advance to the semifinals, BWC was taken out by OHA Edmonton (25-10-1), who then lost to Northern Alberta (25-8-2) in the finals.

BWC’s biggest strength was their offence, which ranked 2nd with 193 goals on the year. Caedan Bankier (27G-26A-55P) led a well-balanced offence that saw nine different players hit the 30-point mark.

Elite 15

Season Record: 27-3-6, 1st in division

Playoffs: Silver

The Elite 15 team had arguably the most successful season of BWC’s academy teams.

They finished 1st in the division to win the banner, a position they held down for pretty much the entire season.

In the playoffs, BWC continuedtheir ways with a 3-0 round robin record, followed by a 5-2 win against Delta (26-6-4) to punch their ticket to the finals.

There they faced Northern Alberta (26-7-3). BWC outshot NAX 35-29 in the final but Tyler Palmer was virtually unbeatable in the Northern Alberta goal, and BWC was forced to settle for silver after a 2-1 loss.

It was an unfortunate end as BWC seemed poised to take it all, but it was still an incredible season for the E-15’s.

Similar to the Midget Preps, the biggest threat of BWC’s Elite 15 team was their offensive depth.

Matthew Seminoff (19G-33A-52P) led the team in scoring and finished third in the entire E-15 division, while Michael Abgrall (26G-22A-48P) and Chase Sandhu (14G-34A-48P) were also in the top 10.

Everyone on the team had at least 14 points, which was the highest minimum point total of any Elite 15 team this year.

Bantam Prep

Season Record: 21-6-3, 3rd in division

Playoffs: Out in round robin

BWC’s Bantam Prep team had a solid season, finishing third in a very competitive division that saw the top six teams finish within nine points of each other.

In what was probably the toughest round robin setup for any BWC team due to the number of strong teamd in the division, BWC went 1-1-1 in their three games and did not qualify for the semifinals.

It ended up being the #4-seed Yale (20-6-4) beating #10-seed NAX (14-16-0) to win the championship. It was a finals matchup that not many saw coming, with none of the top three seeds participating.

BWC’s Bantam Preps were a well-balanced squad this season, finishing in the top-3 for goals for and top-5 for goals against.

Goaltenders Kyle Kelsey and Merik Erickson were Bantam Preps best tandem, with both goalies finishing in the top-four in both save percentage and GSAA (goals saved above average). Erickson led all goalies with three shutouts.

Up front, Tyson Dyck (25G-29A-54P), Brandon Lisowsky (32G-17A-49P), and Jaegar Murdock (21G-22A-43P) all cracked the top 20 scorers in the division.

Bantam Varsity

Season Record: 23-6-1, 3rd in division

Playoffs: Silver

The Bantam Varsity team for BWC also had a strong season and playoffs.

They finished third in regular season play with a 23-6-1 record, well ahead of the teams below and just a pinch behind West Van (27-2-1) and Yale (25-5-0).

In the playoffs, BWC came about as close as you can possibly get without winning it all.

They easily took down Okanagan (17-11-2) and Edge (8-20-2) in round robin play to earn a spot in the semifinals, where they would beat #2-seed Yale by a 6-4 score.

The finals was against West Van, and it came down to the wire.

After a wild first period that saw each team score three goals, BWC took a 4-3 lead in the second on a goal from Luke Mongrain.

WV tied it early in the third and it stayed that way heading into overtime.

Unfortunately it was West Van’s Kassius Kler who scored the winning goal 3:25 into the extra period, leaving BWC with a second-place finish.

BWC’s Tyson Dyck got some individual recognition, winning the Bantam Varsity scoring race with 27 goals and 42 assists for 69 points in only 28 games!
