Cyclone Taylor Cup gets underway Thursday

The BC Junior B Championship series gets underway Thursday in Campbell River.

Four teams will match up to compete for the Cyclone Taylor Cup. The Campbell River Storm will host the three BC Junior B league champions – Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League champions Victoria Cougars; Kootenay International Junior Hockey League champions, Revelstoke Grizzlies; along with Pacific Junior Hockey League champions, North Vancouver Storm.

 

VIJHL

 

Campbell River Storm were defeated in five games by the Victoria Cougars, after the Cougars roared back from an opening 4-0 shut out loss, to post four straight wins, 5-2, 4-0, 5-0 and 4-2. The Storm had downed the Saanich Braves in four straight to advance to the final series, while Victoria advanced after splitting the first two with the Nanaimo Buccaneers, and then putting the pedal down for three straight wins, outscoring Nanaimo 17-5 over the final three games.

The two teams had finished the regular season at the top of their respective divisions. The Storm had finished first overall in the four team North with a 34-10-3-1 record, for 109 points; while the Cougars went 28-12-7-1, for 99 points, in the five team South Division.

This will be the fifth consecutive year the Storm have participated in for the Cyclone Taylor Cup – they won Gold in 2015, Silver in 2017 and Bronze in 2016.

The Cougars are being lead offensively by the league’s #2 overall scorer, Booker Chacalisas, 34G-35A, 69 points in 44 games. Mateo Albinati finished 5th overall with 25G-31A, 56 points in 38 games. Three others figured in the Top 20, Tyler Vanuden #11, Cameron LeSergent #15 and Marshall Brown #17.

Victoria goalies also figured prominently in the league’s regular season stats. Cam Stevenson, posted the third best GGA, at 2.28 and .920, while Owen Sikkes was #5 at 2.33, and .925.

Campbell River’s Mike Dyck is the Storm’s top sniper, coming in at #7 overall in the league regular season scoring, with 24G-29A. Damon Porter was #18, with 18G-20A.

Campbell River’s goalies were #1 and #2 in the league overall. Aaron de Kok was 1.89 GGA and .936; while Jade Little was 1.91 and .920. Both are 2000 born rookies.

 

KIJHL

 

The Revelstoke Grizzlies finished third overall in the 16 team Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, with a record of 42-6-0-1, 85 points.

After splitting the first two final playoff games, the Grizzlies defeated the Kimberly Dynamiters in five games, including two 5-0 shutouts and 4-1 win to finish.

The Dynamiters had finished second in the league, three points up on the Grizzlies and one back of the Kelowna Chiefs. The Grizzlies had downed Kelowna 4-2 in the semi final series to advance to the championship.

The league was formed in 1966 – 52 years ago, and consists of 19 Canadian teams and 1 US team (Spokane Braves).

The Grizzlies are lead offensively by Kaeden Patrick, a rookie who finished 13 in league scoring, with 26G-31A for 57 points in 47 games. Cody Flann was #18 at 2G-33A, 55 points in 42 games.

Grizzlies goaltender Liam McGarva was third overall in league goals against average, at 2.01, with a .922 save percentage. Team mate Noah Desouza was #6 overall, with 2.19 and .920.

 

PJHL

 

The North Vancouver Wolf Pack advanced after defeating the Langley Trappers in four games straight in the 12 team Pacific Junior Hockey League, based in the Lower Mainland.

The Wolf Pack lead the league with a 34-9-0-1 record, 69 points. The Trappers had finished fifth overall, and had downed #2 Delta Ice Hawks 4-1 in the semis to advance.

North Van had defeated the #6  Grandview Steelers 4-1 in the second round, and #8 Ridge Meadows 4-1 in the first round.

Four North Van players finished in the league’s Top 20 scoring, Lucas Baker led with 34G-34A, 68 points, third overall in the regular season. Captain Justin Lee was #8 with 21G-37A. Rookies Jacob Fournier at 10G-41A and Dominic Davis at 26G-24A, were 13th and 14th respectively.

Wolf Pack rookie goalie Niklas Hoem led the league with a 1.86 goals against average and .928. Team mate Spencer Eschyschyn was #3 overall with a 2.04 GGA, and .917.
