Delta Hockey Academy Director Ian Gallagher announced Thursday that Dave Chyzowski, former professional hockey player and current Director of Sales and Marketing for the Kamloops Blazers, will be taking over as the new head coach of the Delta Hockey Academy Female Prep team and the Director of Sales.

Chyzowski was drafted #2 overall in the 1989 NHL entry draft by the New York Islanders. He was the captain of 1990 gold medal winning world junior team for Canada in Helsinki where he tallied 9 goals and 4 assists in only 7 games. After his gold medal championship, Chyzowski went on to play 18 years of professional hockey in the NHL, AHL, IHL, DEL (Germany) and EBEL (Austria) with over 1000 games played before his retirement from competitive play in 2007.

Following his professional career, Chyzowski dedicated himself to supporting the growth of the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association as a coach for over 10 years while working for the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL. Chyzowski has two sons, Ryan and Nick, who play hockey for the Medicine Hat Tigers and the University of Waterloo, respectively.

“We are thrilled that Dave has committed to a long term position with our Female Prep team,” said Gallagher. “His hockey knowledge, experience and passion for coaching will be a great asset to the elite level of play that our girls have achieved.” Chyzowski will be joined on the bench by assistant coach Kate Wheeler [Quinnipiac University ‘12] who has been with the Female Prep team since its inception in 2017.

“Dave’s energy and excitement for this new role will be huge for the growth and development of our female program. We are looking forward to having him on the bench for many years,” said Director of Female Hockey and Business Operations, Owen Pighin.

Gallagher thanked Matt Bardsley and the Kamloops Blazers organization for their cooperation through the transition.

In early June, Gallagher had announced that Scott May would be leaving his role as the Director of Business Operations and the Head Coach of the Female Prep team to take on the General Manager position for the Okanagan Hockey Academy’s Penticton location, and that Owen Pighin (above), Director of Female Hockey and Head Coach of Female Varsity, would be stepping in as the new Director of Business Operations.

Pighin’s professional background includes over 12 years managing business operations for Shoppers Drug Mart and 13 years managing operations for Pharmasave Pacific.

“I look forward to having Owen step into this role,” said Gallagher at the time. “It will be a natural transition for Owen to apply his strong management skill set to a program that he has great passion and enthusiasm for.”

Gallagher had also confirmed that Kate Wheeler, Assistant Coach of the Female Prep team since its inception in 2017, would continue in her role on the bench as the assistant coach. Wheeler is a graduate of Quinnipiac University where she earned a full NCAA Division 1 athletic scholarship and served as an assistant captain from 2010 to 2012. After graduation, Wheeler played for the Neuberg Highlanders in the DEC League in Austria for the 2012/2013 season. She also played for Team Ontario in 2005 and was the captain of Team Ontario Blue in 2007. She played junior hockey for the Oakville JR Ice and the Toronto JR Aeros.

Wheeler will be joined by Development Coach Yogi Svejkovsky and Skating Coach Kris Beech as part of the female development program.
