BCHL – update

The BCHL has just ticked past the half way point of the 58 game regular season.

Here’s a quick look at the key stats.

Standings

Mainland

Leading the league overall are the Coquitlam Express, on 24W-5L-0OTL-0SOL-0T, for 48 points. The Express are the toast of the town in the Mainland division, cruising a full 17 points up on second place Chilliwack Chiefs, with 31. The Langley Rivermen, Prince George Spruce Kings and Surrey Eagles are at 26 points, 25 and 23 respectively.

Interior

In second overall are the perennially strong Penticton Vees, with 21W-7L-1OTL-0SOL-OT, for 43 points, leading the Interior Division. Two teams – the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Trail Smoke Eaters are in hot pursuit, just three points back. The Vernon Vipers and Wenatchee Wild are both 10 points back of the the number two teams. Merritt and West Kelowna are both struggling, with 17 and 15 points respectively, bringing up the rear.

Island

It’s a close race for first place on the Island. The Nanaimo Clippers are currently on top with 40 points, leading the Cowichan Valley Capitals by a single point, but with two games in hand. The Alberni Bulldogs and Powell River Kings are third and fourth, with 28 and 26 points respectively. The Victoria Grizzlies are currently in the Island basement, with 16 points.

 

Team Scoring

Third place Interior team, Trail Smoke Eaters lead the league in team scoring with 110 goals, followed by the Express with 107, and both the Vees and Caps with 106.

Defensively, the Coquitlam Express are the stingiest, with just 52 GA. The Clippers are the only other team in the 50s – with 55 GA.

 

 

Individual Leaders

Kent Johnson, a 2002 born Port Moody native is the league’s leading points producer, with 21G-31-52 points, in 30 games for Trail.

He’s followed by Hingham, MA’s Jay O’Brien, a 1999 playing in Penticton, with 15G-27A, 42 points, and Langley’s Brendan Budy, with 14G-24A, 38 points, playing for the hometown Rivermen.

Turnersville, NJ product Michael Colella (99) is tied with Budy in points, with 13G-25A, in Trail. Teammate Owen Ozar (00), is a point back in fifth overall, with 12G-25A.

 

Goalies

There is no shortage of goaltending talent in the league this year, with seven goalies currently posting GA records better than .920.

Clay Stevenson (99) of the Coquitlam Express, is leading the league with an incredible 18W in 20 games, with just 29GA and a .944 save percentage, and 1.45 GGA.

Jordan Naylor (00) in Nanaimo, is posting the best save percentage, at .948, with 12W-1L-1OTL in 14 games, and is the only other GGA under 2.00 – at 1.62.

Teammate Zachary Bennett (00) is .942 on 6W-6L, and 2.0 GAA.

Fourth spot is held by Reilly Herbst (00) in Vernon with a 10W-2L-1OTL record, posing .923 and 2.12.

Logan Terness (02) is the youngest of the leaders, in Trail, with a 13W-4L-2OTL scrod, at .939 and 2.17.
