Four North Vancouver d-men have cracked the NHL mid-term rankings for North American skaters, in advance of the 2019 NHL draft.
Gianni Fairbrother (9.30.00), a sophomore with the Everett Silvertips, is ranked #85.
Fairbrother is posting 6G-24 points for the Tips, on the coat-tails of another North Shore native – team-mate Jake Christiansen (09.12.99), with 8G-29 points.
Fairbrother, 6’0″, 194, played at Burnaby Winter Club for minor hockey, up to E15 with the BWC CSSHL team, before wrapping his minor hockey with the North West Giants (now Hawks) of the BCMML (3G-17A) and then moving to the Tips for the the 2017-2018 season (2G-3A, 33 games).
Layton Ahac (02.22.01), currently suiting up for the BCHL Prince George Spruce Kings, is ranked #114.
In 40 games this year, he’s posted 20 assists. Last year he finished 6G-28 points in 57 games.
Ahac committed to Ohio State University Buckeyes in November 2017, for the upcoming 2019-2020 season.
He played minor hockey with the North Vancouver Minor Hockey Association, and then for the CSSHL West Van Academy E15 in 2016-2017, posting 8G-13A in 28 games before moving to the BCHL last season.
The 6’3″, 195 pounder was selected for the BCHL All-Star team in his rookie year last year, and to Team Canada West for World Junior A Challenge in Bonnyville in December and for the CJHL Top Prospects game, which was held January 22 in Okotoks.
North Vancouver’s Cole Moberg (10.17.00), currently in his second year with the WHL Prince George Cougars, has been listed in the #175 spot.
At 6’2″, 185 lb, Moberg is currently 9G-24 points in 42 WHL games. In his rookie year last season, he was 2G-9A in 64 games.
This year, Moberg is fourth among scoring leaders on the Cougars, just nine points back of Cougars’ leading points man Vladislav Mikhalchuk (10.16.99) who is 15G-18G in 44 games. Moberg’s 9G is also fourth overall among all WHL d-men.
Moberg played all his minor hockey at North Shore Winter Club, including his final year with the Midget A1 club (21G-27A, 48 points, in 57 games), before moving to the BCMML NW Giants in his second year of midget, (8G-5A, in 20 games) and then onto the Cougars two seasons ago.
The fourth North Vancouver blue liner to be listed this year is Carter Berger (9.17.99), currently with the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL.
Berger (6’0″, 201) is 23G-25A, 48 points, in 40 games for the Grizzlies this year, third overall in team scoring, and 13th overall in league scoring.
Berger, like Moberg, also played his minor hockey at North Shore Winter Club, including his first year of midget with the A1 team, posting 27G-26A, 53 points, in 2015-2016, before joining the BCMML NW Giants for one year, and then moving on to the Grizzlies two seasons ago (2016-2017).
Overall, 48 WHL players have been listed by NHL Central Scouting for the 2019 NHL Draft, scheduled for June 21-22 in Vancouver, B.C.
