“A lot of the players on both teams grew up playing heated games against each other,” said Aaron Wilbur, coach of the Vancouver North West Giants. “So, this game is an opportunity to renew the rivalry between the North Shore Winter Club (NSWC) and Burnaby Winter Club (BWC), and spark some healthy competition. It should be a great game!”
The game is being organized as a fund-raiser for KidsSport Burnaby – all proceeds from the game will be donated to the group. KidSport Burnaby is also a partner in the event.
“This is a great opportunity for our kids to continue to understand that they can have an impact on others and that their actions can have a positive influence in our society with a great organization like KidSport Burnaby,” said Maco Balkovec, head coach of the BWC Academy team. “This should be a fun event to be a part of.”
KidSport helps children and youth in Burnaby who would otherwise not be able to participate in sports due to financial barriers. Tickets are $10.
All current and former North Shore Winter Club and Burnaby Winter Club players, coaches and parents, and corporate sponsors (group tickets), as well as hockey fans of all stripes, are encouraged come out to the game and cheer on their favorite organization.
The two teams both having solid seasons – BWC Prep are at the top of their league and have already clinched first place overall. NW Giants are near the top of the BCMML, and are expected to contend for the BCMML league championship title.
