This year 34 WHL players were selected in the 2016 NHL Draft, including six BC natives.

The Kelowna Rockets d-man Lucas Johansen, a Port Moody native, lead the BC group at 28th overall. Johansen, listed at 6’2″ 180 lbs, put up 10G-39A-49Pts and 20 PIM for the Rockets this season, in his second year with the club.

Johansen was selected by the Rockets in the sixth round of the WHL entry draft, 119th overall in the 2012 Bantam Draft (Nov. 17, 1997 birthday puts him in the mostly 1998 born NHL draft), from Port Moody MHA. His brother Ryan, now a star in Nashville, was picked 150th overall in the 2007 WHL bantam draft, and 4th overall in the 2010 NHL draft.

Johansen played two years of major midget with the North East Chiefs in the BCMML before joining the Rockets two seasons ago.

Calgary Hitmen defenceman Jake Bean was the first WHL player selected, 13th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes. The Calgary native led all WHL defencemen in goals last season with 24, setting a franchise record in the process.

Brett Howden (27th, Tampa Bay / Oakbank, MB / Moose Jaw Warriors), and Sam Steel (30th, Anaheim / Sherwood Park, AB / Regina Pats) were the two other WHL first rounders.

In the second round, Vancouver Giants captain Tyler Benson was selected by the Edmonton Oilers 32nd overall. Benson, who was plagued by injuries last season, is an Edmonton product.

WHL and CHL Goaltender of the Year, Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips was the first goaltender selected in the 2016 NHL Draft when the Philadelphia Flyers used the 48th overall pick to snag the Sherwood Park, AB native.

The Calgary Hitmen led the way this year with five players selected.

The Kelowna Rockets and Victoria Royals each provided four players (not all from BC).

In total, players were drafted from 17 of the WHL’s 22 teams.
