Delta Academy came back from this year’s Rocky Mountain bantam tournament, hosted by North West Calgary Athletic Association, November 8-11, as the top contender from BC, falling just short of medal in the bronze medal game vs Airdrie Xtreme.
The 6-1 loss in the bronze was a disappointing finish for Delta after losing a tight 6-4 dccision to the eventual champions in the semi-finals. Delta had shocked Yale 7-0 in the quarterfinals, after finishing the round robin with a 1-2-0 record.
This year marked the seventh year of the tournament, which is now clearly one of the top Bantam AAA tourneys in Western Canada, attracting the majority of the top teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
LA downed Northern Alberta Xtreme (CSSHL) 5-4 in a shootout to take the Championship. It was a fitting finale, as the two had faced each other in the opening game of the tournament, battling to a 2-2 tie. The Kings outshot NAX 45-34 in the final. They were only US team in the tourney.
Yale meanwhile, had steam-rolled through the round robin, downing OHA Penticton 6-0, Calgary Sabres 7-2 and eventual Bronze medalists, Airdrie 8-1, before being shutout by Delta.
After the opening tie with LA, NAX downed Calgary Flames 4-2 and Notre Dame 5-1 in pool play, and then beat OHA Edmonton 5-2 and Airdrie 9-3 in the playoffs, before meeting LA in the final.
After losing to Yale, OHA Penticton lost their second round robin game, 6-3 to Airdrie, and finished with a 4-2 win over the Calgary Sabres. They finished with a 7-2 loss to the Calgary Royals, and then with a 3-2 win over the Regina Monarchs.
Rink Academy out of Winnipeg, currently the top ranked team in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League, finished first in their pool, with a 3-0-0 record, but then lost to Airdrie 4-2 in the quarterfinals to fall out of medal round contention, and dropped their final game 6-3 to OHA Edmonton.
Kelowna-based Pursuit of Excellence are struggling this year in CSSHL league play with a 2-16-1 record, after going 25-1-4 last year; and also had rough time at the tournament, losing four games straight.
Airdrie are the top team in the 21 team Alberta Major Bantam League at the moment, with a 14-1-4 record.
The host Calgary Flames are currently 5-14-1 in the AMBL, in last place in the South division at the moment.
