Do you know someone who would like to have the opportunity to introduce their child to hockey but who may not know where to start, or be reluctant to commit to the initial expense of outfitting their child in hockey equipment?
If so, there’s a program designed to make it easy for someone brand new to hockey, to get involved.
It’s called Learn to Play, and it’s sponsored by the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association.
Developed with the help of experts from USA Hockey and Hockey Canada, the Learn to Play initiative aims to be the gold standard for minor hockey programs with the goal of inspiring more families to join the hockey community.
Learn to Play changes the way youth hockey is offered by providing first time participants, free head-to-toe equipment, weekly sessions of age appropriate on-ice instruction and certified coaching, led by National Hockey League Alumni, in a fun and safe atmosphere.
While there is a cost associated with the 10 week on-ice program, the hockey equipment is completely free and it’s the player’s to keep once the program is over.
That means free hockey helmet with cage, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, skates, Canucks themed hockey jersey, socks, stick and equipment bag!
Joe Saloustros, a hockey development expert who runs the Inside Hockey Edge program is heading up Learn to Play programs at several locations this year.
Saloustros, who has run the Rascal Hockey program at the Burnaby Winter Club for a number of years, will be getting a new Learn to Play program going at BWC early the New Year.
“The program will run for 10 weeks, starting January 6 and wrapping up on March 10 at BWC,” Saloustros explained, “It’s designed for first time players only, aged 4 to 8. It’s a lot of fun and the cost is very reasonable, considering all the equipment is free, and it’s the players to keep after the program.”
The program is limited to 25 players – first come first serve. The cost is $325 plus GST, or $299 plus GST for Burnaby residents.
