And on Day 3 – they woke up. After starting the 38th Macs Midget tourney with an uninspiring 1-5-1 record, BC’s five Major Midget League teams turned it on today, winning 4 of 5 contests.

Valley West Hawks

The Valley West Hawks, who scrambled with some last minute heroics Sunday to salvage a 3-3 tie vs the Calgary Northstars in their first game, took on the Belarus National U17s Monday, and posted a 5-3 win. (Belarus is located between Poland and Russia, just below Lithuania, and is host to an enormous KGB Headquarters, a strict authoritarian dictatorship –  and former NHL brothers Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn).

Belarus got on the board first today about three minutes in, before Justyn Gurney evened it up (Josh Bruce, Oliver Alcock) about ten minutes later to end the period tied at 1-1.

Five goals were scored in the second. Valley West’s Christian Bosa scored on the first shift (from James Malm and Mike Farren) and then Farren (from Malm and Bosa) put the Hawks up 3-1 with 13:26 left. Belarus came back with one with about four minutes left, to tighten up the game 3-2.

Malm then scored with 35 seconds left in the period (Ilijah Colina), short-handed with Farren in the box on a double minor for head contact. Stanislav Kaminiski wasn’t finished though, scoring with 16 seconds left on the power play, to add to his assists on the first two Belarus goals, and again make it a one goal game at the end of the period, 4-3.

Hawks captain Ben Evanish would score the final goal  of the game on a power play with 7:32 left in the third to secure the win (assists from Bosa and Malm). 5-3 final.

Malm finished with a goal and three assists, Bosa with a goal and two assists. Reece Klassen posted the the win, 32/35. Belarus played both goalies, Maxim Khymz was 13/16 in 38:48, Dimtri Rud was  8/10 in 20:46.

The Hawks play the Prince Albert Mintos Tuesday, and Sherwood Park on Wednesday.  The Mintos also tied the Northstars, and lost to Sherwood Park (6-2), in their first two games. Sherwood Park lost to Northstars 3-0, and tied Belarus 5-5, and so are 1-1-1.

North East Cheifs

The North East Chiefs climbed back in the saddle today after dropping their first two games, with a 5-2 win over the California Wave.

The Chiefs went up 3-0 with goals from Sho Takai (Liam Evenson, Ian Macdonald) and Harris Pearce (TJ Prexler, Logan Bromhead) in the first, and another by Nicholas Bucovaz (Prexler, Jessie Young) in the second, before California got on the board with a power play goal early in the third.

Young would open the three goal advantage again with the next goal around the half way mark of the period (Bucovaz, Prexler). Both teams would add one more with Liam Ryan (Pearce, MacDonald) closing it out 5-3 with 36 seconds left.

California’s Blake Rayfield stopped 29/34. Andrew Henderson stopped 26/28 for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs face the Moose Jaw Generals on Wednesday in their final round robin game, as they aim to go 2-2. The Generals downed the Wave 4-2 in their opener and lost 3-1 to the Flames in their second game. The Chiefs lost 7-4 to the Flames in their opener, and 5-1 to SSAC in game two.

Caribou Cougars

Defending Mac’s champ Caribou Cougars also bounced back with a win Monday, downing the Yorkton Maulers 4-2. The Cougars lost their opener Sunday to Alberta #1, Lloydminster Bobcats 5-2.

Yorkton scored 18 seconds in to get things started on a goal by Derrick Budz (Damain Bentz), but the Cougars responded with two to take a 2-1 lead into the second. Trey Thomas scored first with 11:54 left (Daine Dubois), and then Josh Maser added a power play marker with 4:30 left (Jeremy Gervais, Chris Jandric).

Yorkton evened it up at 2-2 late in the second on a power play goal from Keenan Taphorn (Kaeden Taphorn).

The Cougars then scored two in the third to secure the win. Jessie Pomeroy netted the game winner, with 15:11 left (Thomas, Joel Patsey). Chase Dubois got the insurance unassisted with 51 second left.

Dorin Luding got the win on 17/19 for the Cougars, while Alex Geddes took the loss on 23/27 for the Maulers.

The Cougars play the Foothills Bisons Tuesday and the Ontario Avalanche Wednesday to wrap up the round robin. The Bisons lost to Yorkton 4-1 in their opener, and then trounced the Avalanche 9-1 in game two. The Avalanche lost their opener 8-0 to Lloyd.

The North West Giants moved to 2-0 Monday with a 4-1 win over the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.

The Giants scored all four goals late in the third, including an empty netter to notch the win.

Red Deer’s Tyler Graber opened the scoring late in the second before Jack Graham (Will Warm) finally evened it up with about seven minutes left in the game.

Jackson Shepard put the Giants up 2-1 less than a minute later (Mateo Coltellaro, Clint Colebourn). Jackson Leppard then scored on power play (Mitch Williams, Kyle Kaufmann) with 4:26 left to give the Giants some breathing room. Carter Stephenson got the empty netter with 2:23 left to finish it up 4-1.

Beck Warm was 24/25 for the Giants, Dawson Weatherill was 18/21 for Red Deer.

The Giants will face Calgary Buffaloes Tuesday, and the Austrian U18 team on Wednesday. The Buffs edged the Tisdale Trojans 7-4 (two ENs) yesterday and lost 3-2 to Austria in their first game Boxing Day. The Austrians edged Red Deer 2-1 in their second game Sunday, and didn’t play Monday. They’ll play the Trojans Tuesday.

South Island Royals

The South Island Royals faced the Calgary Royals in the final BC game of the day on Monday, and were looking to break out of a 0-2 start.

But it wasn’t to be. The Calgarians scored first on a power play and then again to take a 2-0 lead into the second. South Island’s Lach Hadley would make it 3-1 at the end of the second, but Calgary then poured it on with two more in the third to close it out 5-1. Shots were 45-22 for Calgary (goalie stats not available).

The South Islanders will wrap up their round robin on Wednesday with a game against the Eastman Selects. The Selects are 0-2, dropping their first 3-2 vs the Calgary Royals, and their second 4-2 vs the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
