BC teams followed up a positive 4 out of 5 Win showing at the Macs Monday, with a 3-0-0 record on Tuesday. The South Island Royals and the North East Chiefs were off. All five teams will finish their round robin play on Wednesday.
The North West Giants moved to 3-0 Tuesday with a slim 2-1 against the grain win over the Calgary Buffaloes.
The Buffs outshot the Giants almost 2:1, with Giants goalie David Tendeck stopping 36 of 37 and earning player of the game for the Giants.
Mathieu Fawcett stopped 18 of 20 for the Calgary team.
Both Giants goals came in the first period, and both from rookies. Jackson Leppard got the first one on the first shift, assisted by Josh Latta. Liam Kindree got the the second one about five minutes later, with a helper from Kyle Kaufmann.
Bryce Salverda got the Buffalo’s only goal with 3:48 left in the second. The Buffs pulled Fawcett with almost two minutes left but couldn’t solve Tendeck.
The win moves the Giants into first place in Pool 4. The U18 Austrian team is in second with 2-1-0 record and are next up for the Giants, Wednesday morning.
The Caribou Cougars moved to 2-0-1 Tuesday with a tight 5-3 empty-net win over Foothills CFR Chemical Bisons.
The Cougars opened a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Chris Jandric (Jeremy Gervais, pp) about four minutes in, and by Tyler Ho with about five minutes left (Ty Kolle).
The Bisons got one back early in the second on a goal from Tyson Scott (Tyler Petrie, Cooper Kraus), but the Cougar’s Chase Dubois answered a few shifts later (Daine Dubois), to close out the second period 3-1.
The Bisons opened the third with a short-handed goal from Brett Trentham (Liam Izyk) to make it 3-2.
Caribou’s Jesse Pomery (Joel Patsey, Tyler Maser) gave the Cougars some breathing space on a power play with 12:30 left, only to have the Bisons scratch back with 5:49 left on a marker from Kyle Gordon (Cameron Shorrock, Gary Haden).
Dubois got the empty netter with 10 seconds left. Ryan Simpson was busy in nets for the Bisons, stopping 30 of 34. Dorin Luding got the win for the Cougars, stopping 18 of 21.
The Cougars are now in second place in Pool 3, a game behind the Lloydminster Bobcats who are 3-0-0 and who downed the Cougars 5-2 in their opener.
Next up are the Ontario Avalanche who are 0-3.
The Valley West Hawks were also in a tight one, winning 4-3 vs the Prince Albert Mintos, to move to 2-0-1.
The teams traded goals in the first period with the Minto’s Taylor Kreutzer (Braden Isbister) scoring first short-handed about three minutes in.
Valley West captain Ben Evanish answered with the first of three on a power play at the end of the period (Luka Burzan, Kabir Gill) and then at the start of the second (James Malm, Gill), but the Mintos evened it up late on a goal from Drake Teer.
In the third, Evanish again scored first (Burzan, Malm) early on a power play. Ilijah Colina then scored off the next face-off (Jusyn Gurney, Josh Bruce), to give the Hawks a two goal cushion.
The Mintos battled back though, and got to within one with 1:57 left on a goal from Erik Gardiner (Teer, Layne Matechuk).
Both goalies were busy, with Nic Tallarico stopping 32 of 35 for the Hawks, and Derrick Hucul stopping 35 of 38 for the Mintos.
The 2-0-1 Hawks are in first place win Pool 1, ahead of the Calgary Northstars in second place with a a 1-1-2 record.
The Hawks finish up the round robin with a game against Sherwood Park on Wednesday morning.
