Six teams from the BC Major Midget League are participating in the 35th Annual Mac’s Midget Tournament in Calgary, western Canada’s premier test of midget hockey. So far the BC teams have not fared well, with just one win in 11 games. After three games, Finland U17 seems to be the team to beat for the championship, scoring 31 GF vs 4 GA.

The Okanagan Rockets (1st in BCMML), Vancouver NW Giants (2nd), Valley West Hawks (3), Vancouver NE Chiefs (4th), Caribou Cougars (6th) and South Island Royals (7th) are all playing in the 5 division, 25 team tournament, against the top teams in Western Canada, as well teams from Europe and the US.

The Rockets and the Cougars are in the same pool, the other pools have one BC team in each. Here’s update on each team.  Divisional standings to end of play Saturday night at end of report.

Rockets: 1-0-1

BCMML leaders Okanagan Rockets won their first game Thursday, 4-2 over Calgary Flames, then tied Red Deer Optimist Chiefs 3-3 Friday. The Flames are currently placed sixth in the southern division of the AAA Alberta Midget Hockey League. The Optimists are back to back national Telus Cup midget champions and are currently in third place (14-5-5) in the southern division. The Rockets had a bye Saturday.

NW Giants: 0-1-1

The Vancouver NW Giants, who are in a tight race with the Rockets for first place in BCMM league play, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead vs the Leduc Kings in their first game of tourney Friday night, but couldn’t hold off the determined Leduc team, who held a 5-3 lead at the midway point of the third.  However, the Giants battled back and Justin Szeto tied the game for the Giants in the dying seconds. Final 5-5.

Leduc is in third place in the northern division of the AMHL. The NW Giants are tournament defending champions.
