With more choices than ever before affecting where elite 15-17 year-olds suit up for their midget hockey years, BC Hockey announced Tuesday, January 20, 2015 that there will be several changes made to the Major Midget League rules for the upcoming 2015-2016 season.
Teams will now be permitted to commit to 60% of their roster after new spring identification camps run by the teams.
Several changes to minor hockey association Major Midget team affiliations and boundaries were also announced, although for the coming season players will have the choice of staying in their 2014-2015 carded catchment area or moving to the new one.
New Westminster and some Burnaby Minor addresses will now be in the Vancouver NE Chiefs territory. Langley players will move from Valley West Hawks to the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. North Delta will move from Greater Vancouver Canadians to Valley West Hawks.
Another change, each team will be permitted to apply to sign up to three non-resident players, after they’ve been released from their home area teams.
Some teams have already made announcements about their plans – see Okanagan Rockets release, also posted here.
Here’s the wording in the official release from BC hockey, dated January 21, 2015:
“League teams will now host Identification Camps in the spring following the TELUS Cup, national championships.
The Identification Camp presents an option for players interested to receive feedback from the teams and more information on the League.
A player does not have to attend an Identification Camp in the Spring to be eligible to attend the Evaluation Camp in August.
Teams will be eligible to verbally commit up to 12 players at the end of the Camp, and there will be no player releases.
MML teams are boundary-based, and the following areas will be changing boundaries for the 2015-2016 season:
|Area||Former Team||New Team||Notes|
|Burnaby Minor||Burnaby Minor (East)||Vancouver NW Giants||Vancouver NE Chiefs||Postal Codes V5B, V5A, V5E, V3N, V3J|
|Burnaby Minor (West)||Vancouver NW Giants||Postal Codes V5C, V5G, V5H, V5J|
|New Westminster||Vancouver NW Giants||Vancouver NE Chiefs|
|Langley||Valley West Hawks||Fraser Valley Thunderbirds|
|North Delta||Greater Vancouver Canadians||Valley West Hawks|
|100 Mile House||Cariboo Cougars||Thompson Blazers|
|Cowichan Valley||Lake Cowichan||South Island Royals||North Island Silvertips||North of the Cowichan River and South Lake Cowichan|
|Cowichan Valley North|
|Cowichan Valley South||South Island Royals||South of the Cowichan River|
Players registered in the 2014-2015 season who are affected by the boundary changes are eligible to attend an Evaluation Camp under the following criteria:
a) The Zone in which the player was carded to in the 2014-2015 season or
b) The Zone in which the player resides based on the changes to the Boundaries.
Additionally, there will be a Player Movement Waiver Policy that will allow for MML teams to apply to issue up to three (3) residential waivers for players that were released from Evaluation Camps in their home zone.”
