Midget Tier 1 Championships, Host: Comox Valley, Vancouver Island
The Midget Tier 1 BC Provincial Championships are being hosted this year by Comox Valley, from the Vancouver Island district.
Format: 7 teams, 6 game round robin, top two teams advance to championships.
Two teams represent the Lower Mainland in the BC Tier 1 Championships each year. This year the teams are Seafair who finished first in the regular season (13-1-4) and won the PCAHA league championship banner, and North Vancouver, who finished second in the regular season (13-4-1) and lost to Seafair in the PCAHA final.
Two teams are also representing the Island; Comox Valley and Nanaimo. Comox come in as both host and VBHL champions, having defeated Nanaimo in a three game series, 9-2, 3-7, 5-3. As two teams from the host district are always part of the provincial championship format, Nanaimo come in as the #2 Vancouver Island team.
The Northeast Trackers are a team comprised mainly of players from the BC Peace River district in the Northeast. The team was originally formed to play in the BC Major Midget League but when the team’s acceptance in the league became problematic, the team joined the North Alberta Midget Hockey League, a 27 team league consisting of teams from the top half of Alberta. The Trackers can draw from the Yukon as well. The Trackers won the NAMHL championships in 2011, and finished this year with 15-16-2 regular season record.
The Kelowna Rockets Tier 1 team advanced after a three game series win over Kamloops, 1-2, 6-0, and 8-1.
Prince George plays in the Tier 1 division of the Okanagan Mainline League, vs Kelowna, Kamloops and Vernon, and finished first in the league with a 9-3-1 record, vs Kamloops at 7-4-2 and Kelowna at 7-5-3. PG is representing the North Central district.
