Three wins in December have pushed the NSWC Midget A1 to within hailing distance of undefeated Coquitlam at the top of the PCAHA regular standings. The team has downed North Van 4-2, Langley 2-0 and Vancouver 4-0 since Dec 2.
The Hawks have been anchored by two very solid goalies, and stingy D. The nets are backstopped by third year vet Johnnie Donohoe and bantam aged Cole Demers. The two have allowed only 9 goals in the past 8 games.
The D are fronted by third years, Justin Pouliot, Brett Andrews and Christian Gacina, second years Wyatt Versluis and Andre Margo and first year James McIntosh.
Goal scoring has also improved in December with the team tallying ten goals in the last three games.
Offensive production has been pretty evenly spread between the top two lines, with first years Desi Burgart and Alex Uryga narrowly leading the goal production and Trevor Wilson and Justin Pouliot contributing the most assists.
The team will have to keep up the tough D and the improved scoring to stay near the top. Seafair and Ridge Meadows are hot on their heels, and another three teams not far behind.
The team finishes off their first half with games against the two of the toughest teams, playing Seafair on Dec 20 and Coquitlam on Dec 22.
Top ranked Coquitlam has won seven straight, most of them by two goal margins. They’ve given up 18 though, vs just nine by NSWC.
Head coach Duncan Vyner will no doubt be fine-tuning his strategy as the big games approach.
