It couldn’t have been any closer. Or more heartbreaking for the visiting Okanagan Rockets.
In the end it was the Vancouver North West Giants prevailing on a lone game three power play deflection by Anthony Conti to capture their fifth consecutive BC Major Midget League Championship.
The series opened Friday night with a 3-1 win by the Giants. Brandon del Grosso notched the empty netter to deliver the two goal spread with 25 seconds left. del Grosso had tied the game midway through the second on a power play on a pass from Anthony Conti. Carter Hikichi had opened for the Rockets early in the first. Gavin Gould had put the Giants up 2-1 early in the third, assisted by Jackson Cressey and Colton Kerfoot.
Game two Saturday night was a 4 1/2 hour marathon that ended after midnight, with a 4-3 win by the Rockets in the 3rd OT. The Rockets had forced the OT with just 58 seconds remaining and the goalie pulled. Finally, late in the third OT period, Liam Finlay deflected a shot from the point to force the deciding game.
After a few hours rest, the teams were back at Burnaby Winter Club for a 9:30 puck drop Sunday morning, which soon turned into a goaltender duel. After Conti’s goal, the Rockets pressed hard, but were unable to beat Bo Didur.
