NW Giants edge past Rockets on final weekend

in regular season

Mar 5, 2014

The Kelowna Rockets and North West Giants battled all season long for bragging rights as top dog in the BC Major Midget Hockey League.

The Rockets held the edge right up until the final weekend, when an uncharacteristic third period meltdown over fifth place NE Chiefs, gave the Giants the league title.

The Rockets entered the weekend with a perfect home record of 18-0-0 and held a 7-2 lead going into the third period of game one, only to see it vanish in a five minute stretch, and the game end in a 7-7 tie. Connor Burk scored a natural hat trick for the Chiefs in the stretch.

The tie dropped the Rockets a point behind the Giants at the end of the weekend, as the Giants closed out with 7-0 and 4-1 wins over the Caribou Cougas.

A 4-3 win Feb 9, by the Vancouver NW Giants over the Okanagan Rockets marked a turning point for the young Vancouver team, who had lost their first two games against the Kelowna club when the teams first faced off in mid November.

The win guarantees the Giants home ice advantage so long as they remain in the playoff series.

The top eight teams face off this weekend in the first round of playoffs.
