NW Giants get BC’s first win at the Macs

Day two at the Macs featured all 5 BCMML teams in action; but only one team – the NW Giants – posted a win, giving BC a 1-5-1 record to date.

Two games were played on day 1 Saturday; South Island Royals dropped their opener 3-1 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and the NE Chiefs lost 7-4 to the Calgary Flames.

South Island opened the action again Sunday, with a 9:00 game vs the Regina Pat Canadians, losing 8-0. The Pats scored three in the first, and five in the second.

Defending Mac’s champion Caribou Cougars also lost their opener, 5-2 to the #1 Alberta team, Lloydminster Bobcats.

The Bobcats opened a 2-0 lead after the first period, and extended it to 3-0 on a power play 14 seconds into the second before Riley Coish quickly answered on Cougar power play about a minute later, but the Bobcats Jaxaon Kaluski made with 4-1 with 8:10 left in the period, with his second goal of the game.

Cariboo got back within two with a Chase Dubois power-play goal, midway through the third, but the Bobcats added an empty net goal to finish the scoring. The Bobcats lead Pool 3 with 2-0 record.

The Cougars are back on the ice on Monday evening against the Yorkton Maulers (0-1). They play the Foothills Bisons (1-0) on Tuesday and the Ontario Avalanche (0-1) on Wednesday.

The Valley West Hawks came from behind on late two shorthanded goals by Luka Burzan to salvage a 3-3 tie vs the Calgary Northstars.

The Hawks’ James Malm had opened the scoring in the first, but the Northstars answered with three in the second to open the 3-1 lead (two by Brendan Nemes). Burzan’s first came with 1:38 left with a helper from Ilijah Colina; his second came thirty seconds later, unassisted (goalie pulled).

Nic Tallarico stopped 30 of 33 for the Hawks; Joshua Belisle saved 26 of 29 for the Northstars.

The North West Giants grabbed BC’s first win at the tourney in the afternoon, with a 4-2 win over a determined Tisdale Trojans.

The Giants opened a 2-0 lead late in the first on a power play goal by Will Warm, from Liam Kindree and Jackson Shepard with 2:34 left, and then on a goal by Justin Wilson assisted by Eathan Cap and Shepard with 50 seconds left.

The Trojans answered with two even-handed in the second to make it 2-2 at the end of two.

The Giants scored twice in the third (Graham, from Kevin Wong and Warm; and Jason Village from Mateo Coltellaro and Josh Latta) to secure the win.

David Tendeck made 28 saves on 30 shots for the Giants, Justen Close stopped 31 of 35 for the Trojans.

In the final BC game of Day 2, the NE Chiefs were downed 5-1 by the South Side Athletic Club (Edmonton). SSAC got the first goal about four minutes in on their first shot of the game, but it was answered about 30 seconds later. SSAC would get one more to finish out the period 2-1, and shots 16-6 for SSAC.

SSAC kept up the offensive attack in the second, scoring two more goals, to lead 4-1 with a 31-10 advantage in shots.

South Side added one more in the third to close it out, shots ended up 39-20.
