The NW Giants and the Cariboo Cougars, the top two teams in the BC Major Midget League, face off in two games in Prince George this weekend and two wins could see the Giants vault Cariboo in the standings.
The NW Giants are 12-2-0 and three points back of the 13-2-1 first-place Cougars but the Giants have two games in hand. Last weekend they bounced back after suffering their first two losses of the season with two wins against the Thompson Blazers.
They’re only allowing two goals per game and goaltenders David Tendeck and Beck Warm both have 6-1-0 records. Tendeck has a 1.71 GAA while Warm is just behind with a 2.29 GAA and they’re sure to be tested by the Cougars and their league-best 5.5 goals per game.
Cariboo will be without league leading scorer and captain Austin Gray (15-14-29), at least for Saturday’s game, as he has been called up to play for the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings. The Cougars still have tons of offensive firepower though, with five other players in the top-20 in league scoring: Steven Jandric (8-19-27, 2nd), Colton Thomas (12-12-24, 4th), Justin Almeida (12-10-22, 8th), Darren Hards (6-15-21, 10th), Todd Bredo (6-12-18, 19th).
The two teams will meet again in the regular season’s second-to-last weekend.
