Pacific Coast Sets Bantam Flights

Flights are set for the start of this year’s regular season play in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association, the governing body which regulates all minor hockey associations in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

There are seven bantam flights, and 68 teams this year.

Hockey Hub has listed all the bantam teams below, (other divs to follow later this week) with the first column showing a team’s current overall ranking in PCAHA bantam rep hockey, the second column showing their ranking within their flight and the third column showing placement round and rank.

This third column clearly identifies which teams have moved up or down from their original placement round.  Notable in this regard is the Sno-Kings move from Group 3 to Flight 1, on a perfect record of 8-0 and exceptional 82 GF vs 8 GA.

What is a bit unusual however, is having 13 teams in this flight, 11 is the ideal number, as this quantity permits every team to play every other team twice in the 20 game regular season. Overall rankings at the end of the season will be distorted because of some teams playing higher (or lower) ranked teams more or less than teams they’re competing with for playoff positions.

What is also somewhat odd, is the fact that some teams can request to be moved up or to stay put when logic might dictate they should either stay put or be moved up – i.e. Coquitlam 0-6-2 and Semi at 1-6-1 staying in Flight 1, and both Cloverdale and Ridge moving up, when despite posting good winning records. a closer look shows narrow margins on many wins.

Richmond A1 made this request last year, and posted 1-17-2 record, scoring just 17 goals in 20 games.

In a similar vein, the BWC A2 team last season requested a move up to Flight 1 after the Christmas break, after having posted a 10-1-1 record in Flight 2, and then went 1-6-1 in the second half in Flight 1.

The final bit of oddity in the system is the inclusion of the sportsmanship point in the standings. Designed to discourage penalties, by rewarding less penalized teams with higher rankings, the system definitely works, with most top ranking teams also scoring near the maximum of 8 sporties. Beware old-school coaches, you could be left looking in from the outside at playoff time, despite your superior W-L record.

A final note, these flights are only valid for regular season play. Once playoffs start, teams are placed in Tiers, according to their BC Hockey designations, which are based primarily on association membership size, and are meant to equalize the playing field for provincial championships for smaller communities.

The flights for this year are:
