Burnaby, B.C. – Almost 40 minor hockey teams from across North America are coming to Burnaby in December to compete in the third annual Pat Quinn Classic.   The 2017 tournament, December 27-30, features 38 teams in three divisions – Peewee AAA Elite, Bantam AAA, and Bantam AAA Elite.

Teams from as far away as Alaska, Dallas, New England and California are making this year’s holiday season trek to Burnaby to compete against some of B.C.’s best minor hockey squads from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan. (see list below.)

“I’m really pleased with the teams and players that will be battling it out on the ice this year,” said Cliff Ronning, honourary chair of the Pat Quinn Classic. “The tournament is going to showcase some exceptional hockey.”

The Pat Quinn Classic has evolved from the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association  December Bantam hockey tournament, which has now run annually since 1962. It’s now the longest-running event of its kind in the world.

The tournament was renamed the Pat Quinn Classic in 2015, in honor of the legendary player, coach, general manager and team owner.

Pat is internationally-recognized as one of the hockey’s greatest coaches and ambassadors.

Proceeds go to the Pat Quinn Legacy Fund. Managed by Hockey Canada, the fund supports players in post-secondary education after their hockey careers.

Quinn is one of the most recognizable faces in Canadian sport and has made an enormous contribution to sport in British Columbia and Canada.

When Ronning played for the Vancouver Canucks, Quinn coached him. “I was fortunate to consider Pat a friend and mentor, and that’s what fuels my passion and commitment to this tournament,” added Ronning.

Helping to enhance the scope of the 2017 tournament is Gateway Entertainment and Casinos Ltd. As a platinum sponsor, the Gateway partnership showcases the company’s Burnaby food and entertainment facilities and reaffirms its commitment to youth sport and the community.

“We’re are very excited to again partner with the Pat Quinn Classic,” said Robert Ward, Senior Vice President of Operations at Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd.  “Supporting local sport events is just one way we give back to our community.  I’m impressed by how this tournament continues to raise the bar and we’re proud that our partnership helps create an incredible experience for the players, coaches, volunteers and families.”

Supported by the City of Burnaby and Tourism Burnaby, in addition to raising $25,000 for the Pat Quinn legacy fund since 2015, the tournament also attracts a significant number of hockey scouts.

In fact, 131 participants from the 2015 and 2016 tournaments have been drafted to the Western Hockey League.

The Bill Copeland Sports Centre, in Burnaby Sport Park, is the feature rink for the 2017 Pat Quinn Classic. Other venues include: Burnaby Lake Arena, Burnaby Winter Club, Kensington Arena, Burnaby Winter Club, Burnaby 8 Rinks and Planet Ice Coquitlam.

All games will be webcast.
