PCAHA Bantam Races – nearing the turn

in regular season

December 8, 2018

As PCAHA league play approaches the half season mark, here’s our annual overview of how things are shaping up in the bantam division prior to the Christmas break.

But first some background – as there have been some remarkable changes in bantam hockey over the past few seasons, especially over the past two.

This year the PCAHA bantam rep hockey division has shrunk again, shedding another Flight (approx 10 teams) while the rival Canadian Sports School League bantam has expanded again.

Just two seasons ago (2016-2017), there were seven PCAHA Bantam Flights and 72 teams competing. This year, there are just five Flights and 55 teams, a drop of nearly 25%.

Over the same period, the CSSHL bantam league expanded from 15 teams to 24.

Two seasons ago, Delta (3) and Yale (1) were the only Lower Mainland organizations with CSSHL bantam teams. Two years before that (2014-2015), there were none.

There are now 11 bantam teams in PCAHA territory – West Van (2), BWC (2), Delta (3), Vancouver (St. George’s – 2) and Abbotsford (Yale – 2); comprising over more than 200 players.

So while the overall complexion is now different, it’s interesting to note which minor hockey organizations are still icing the most competitive teams (Langley) – and to contemplate whether the CSSHL bantam elite model is here to stay, or perhaps unsustainable, and if perhaps someday the PCAHA will return to +70 bantam teams.

In the meantime, let’s go PCAHA Bantams – play hard and have fun!
