PCAHA Peewee Final Standings 2017-2018

in regular season

As playoffs get underway for the Pacific Coast Peewee teams, scroll down to see a summary of how the teams finished in the standings overall, in their individual Flights.

Playoff primer:

For those not familiar with the “A” and “T” terminology, and the difference between ‘Flight’ and ‘Tier’, here’s a quick overview. (Scroll down if you know the drill).

First off, Tier is a term used to designate levels of competition at the Provincial Playoff level. The idea is to make competition as level as possible for the provincials, while attracting teams from all over BC.

There are four Tiers in total.

Each association is assigned a Tier designation by BC Hockey, generally based on the number of players in the association (Winter Clubs are exceptions), which in turn reflects the size of the community.

Big associations are all Tier 1 associations. Their top team is the A1 team, and will compete in Tier 1 Provincials, their second team is the A2 team and will compete in the Tier 2 provincials – with the A1 teams from smaller, Tier 2 associations.

To further confuse matters, the Pacific Coast uses its own designations of Flight to balance divisions during the regular PCAHA season.

Flight 1 is typically all Tier 1, A1 teams.

In years past, some Tier 1 A2 teams have played in Flight 1. Additionally some Tier 2 A1 teams have played in the division. For example in 2013-2014, BWC A2-T2 and Hollyburn A1-T2 played in Flight 1.

This year season however, only A1-T1 teams played in Flight 1.

Flights have the advantage of being based on competitive level rather than association size, which makes for a more balanced play within each Flight during the regular season.

For example in Flight 3, there are Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 associations represented, with A1, A2 and A3 competing for league play.

However, once the playoffs start, teams are re-organized according to their provincial status (see related post for PCAHA playoff groupings), which quickly leads to some major blow-outs in the early going.

For example, NSWC who finished second in Flight 1, were matched up with Burnaby Minor who finished 9th in Flight 2 in round one. Which is why for many teams, the Presidents Series playoffs (teams eliminated from Provincial contention) are the ‘real’ playoffs.

Another wrinkle, teams who feel they are placed in the wrong flight to start the season can appeal to the PCAHA to be moved up – and some occasionally moved down, for the New Year portion of the regular season (the final 8 games of the regular season 20 game schedule).

This year, South Delta A1 were moved up from Flight 2, where they were #1, with an 11-1-0 record, at the Christmas break.  They went 0-6-0 in Flight 1 down the stretch. Similarly Sno-King A1 were in first place at the turn, with a 10-2-2 record in Flight 3. They finished 2-4-0 in Flight 2.

That said, here’s how the Peewees finished up in their PCAHA flights for the 2017-2018 season.
