January 31, 2013 – The North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks did themselves a huge favour, beating their rival Burnaby Winter Club Bruins last week by a 2-0 score. With the win, the Winterhawks were able to create the narrowest of leads – 2 points – in the flight 1 standings. They’ll need to maintain that slim lead over their final two games, but they control their own fate when it comes to winning a league title. They face South Delta and the third place Vancouver TBirds this weekend.
The Burnaby Winter Club used a series of games in hand to close a huge gap between themselves and the North Shore Winter Club, but lost the marquee matchup of the regular season last week. They should not give up yet, as the slightest misstep by the Winterhawks could create the opportunity the Bruins need. They finish the regular season with games against 6th place Coquitlam and 11th place South Delta.
The Vancouver TBirds will finish the season well back of the two clubs ahead of them and are yet to solve the Winter Clubs this season. With that said, they have been more than competitive against everyone else, with a 3W-1L-2T record in January.
Semiahmoo is also quite far behind the Winterhawks and Bruins but have also had a strong January, picking up four wins in seven games.
